The Facility Design Senior Director is responsible for leading the planning, design, and development of facility projects across the US Foods Supply Chain network. This role ensures that all designs meet operational, safety, regulatory, and sustainability standards while supporting the company’s growth and capital project objectives.

This position is virtual/remote which means the work can be completed from anywhere is the United States except Hawaii or United States Territories.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Design Program Governance

Defines, owns and implements US Foods Facility design strategy across all Supply Chain project types including Warehousing, Transportation, Facility & Site Infrastructure, and Administrative Spaces.

Defines, owns and implements US Foods due diligence strategy in support of new property acquisitions, M&A and Supply Chain network growth.

Defines, owns and implements US Foods facility design tenants and standards.

Defines, owns and implements US Foods design modeling (BIM) and document management strategy.

Leadership & Team Development

Leads, coaches, and develops Design Project Managers (DPMs), setting clear expectations, priorities, and performance objectives.

Fosters a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and safety.

Builds organizational capability in Facility Design development and delivery.

Facility Design

Leads and responsible for the conceptualization, planning, and development of facility designs for new builds, expansions, renovations, retrofits and infrastructure projects.

Leads team of internal and external design partners including architects, engineers, and consultants to develop cost-effective, constructible, and innovative designs.

Collaborates with Engineering, Construction, Operations, Supply Chain Network Planning & Automation, Facilities, and Real Estate teams to ensure designs meet functional and operational requirements.

Ensures designs comply with all regulatory requirements, safety standards, and company design guidelines, including cold chain and food distribution requirements.

Reviews and approves design documentation, drawings, and specifications to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance.

Budgeting and Capital Planning

Develops and implements a multiyear project delivery and pricing model in partnership with Supply Chain Network Planning, Finance, Construction, Real Estate and other partners (internal and external) as needed.

Supports 5-year capital planning providing accurate project costs projections across all project types.

Cross Functional & Executive Partnership

Serves as a key advisor to senior leaders on facility design related topics and programs, communicating their impact/risks as required.

Represents facility design programs in enterprise planning, transformation, and growth initiatives.

RELATIONSHIPS

Internal Relationships : Partners with Sr Director, Design & Construction and cross-functional teams including Operations, Supply Chain, Facilities, Real Estate, Finance, IT, RISK, Environmental and LP to ensure design solutions meet business needs.

External Relationships: Collaborates with architects, engineers, consultants, and vendors to deliver high-quality, innovative, and compliant designs. Maintains relationships with regulatory agencies, local authorities, and industry organizations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Remote : This role is remote, and the associate is expected to perform assigned responsibilities from a combined home-based and travel function.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

10 years of progressive experience in facility design

Experience leading large, complex, multi‑site capital programs.

Industrial facility design and architectural planning experience.

Site development, permitting, and regulatory compliance experience.

Capital budgeting and cost engineering experience.

Lean facility design and continuous improvement experience.

Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements, construction standards, and operational design needs.

Proven ability to deliver high-quality, compliant, and innovative design solutions.

Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams and external consultants.

Strong communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.

Ability to travel to operating sites as needed.

Vendor negotiation and contract management (A/E, GC, automation) experience.

Risk mitigation and scenario planning experience.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Facility design experience in food distribution, logistics, and/or cold storage or freezer environments.

Experience supporting rapid growth, network expansion, or transformation initiatives.

Advanced degree.

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Standard required physical activities including length of time performing each activity.

Compensation depends on relevant experience and/or education, specific skills, function, geographic location, and other factors as applicable by law (for example: state or local minimum wage thresholds). The expected base rate for this role is between

$145,000 - $225,000
