Job Summary
The Surgical Assistant serves as a First or Second Assistant to the surgeon during complex and routine surgical and invasive procedures. This role supports the surgical team through all phases of care, ensuring a safe, efficient, and patient-centered operating room environment.

About the Facility
Advocate Condell Medical Center is a full-service acute care hospital located in Libertyville, Illinois. The hospital provides a wide range of surgical and medical services and is known for its commitment to clinical excellence, patient safety, and a collaborative care environment. Team members work together across disciplines to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care.
Major Responsibilities
- Provide first or second assist support for surgical procedures across all patient populations
- Prepare operating rooms by gathering supplies, instruments, and equipment
- Assist with patient positioning, transferring, prepping, and draping
- Anticipate surgeon needs and ensure all required instruments and supplies are available prior to incision
- Maintain sterile field and adhere to aseptic techniques
- Ensure all surgical equipment is available, functional, and ready for use
- Support training and onboarding of Surgical Technologists and new Surgical Assistants
- Participate in department initiatives, quality improvement efforts, and team-based projects
Licensure, Registration & Certification Required
- Certified Surgical Assistant (or eligible to obtain certification within 30 days of hire)
- Current CPR certification
Education Required
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Assistant program preferred
Experience Required
- Previous operating room (OR) experience required
Scheduled Hours:
- Schedule: Monday through Friday 11:00 am to 7:30 pm; including rotating call and holiday call - 30 minute call time required
- FTE: Full Time

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
- Ability to work effectively in high-stress, fast-paced surgical environments
- Strong critical thinking and ability to respond quickly in emergencies
- Ability to adapt to changing clinical environments
- Understanding of aseptic technique and sterile field maintenance
- Ability to recognize and respond to the needs of diverse patient populations
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance
- Patient lifting over 35 pounds requires assistance and/or use of equipment
- Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physically demanding work
Work Environment
- Exposure to body fluids, waste, chemicals, radiation, anesthesia gases, hazardous materials, and infectious diseases
- Participation in on-call rotation (nights, weekends, holidays) required
- Ability to respond to emergency situations and facility codes (e.g., fire, evacuation)
