Job description

The mission of the legal office of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is to further the Laboratory’s strategic goals by protecting and preserving the Laboratory’s legal, ethical, and financial integrity and reputation.

The objective is to provide world-class legal services to support the world-class science being performed at BNL. This is accomplished by providing strategic legal advice and counsel and seeking to ensure that all members of the Laboratory staff conduct their activities in accordance with applicable law and standards consistent with the goals, vision, and values of the Laboratory.

Position Description:

Brookhaven National Laboratory’s (BNL’s) Office of General Counsel, is seeking a Staff Specialist who will be the sole support for a variety of complex and independently driven activities. Reporting directly to the General Counsel (GC) the incumbent will develop, monitor, and update processes for a number of established and evolving requirements.  The incumbent will serve as a point of contact and liaison for the GC and the Lab population.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the GC in management of OGC and budget matters

  • Provide general administrative support to OGC, including calendar management, meeting and activity coordination, travel planning, filing, expense reporting and other administrative duties as required

  • Provide specialized legal administrative support to OGC in connection to internal and external investigations, administrative filings, and litigation

  • Manage engagements with external counsel, including initial engagement letters, invoice review, and payment processing; coordinate with relevant OGC and DOE attorneys as necessary

  • Assist the GC in performing the role of Secretary to the Board of Directors, including creation of agendas, board communications, collection and preparation of board materials and taking of meeting minutes

  • Work with the OGC attorneys and staff in maintaining the Laboratory’s external activity and conflict of interest reporting system and act as primary contact for Laboratory in understanding and complying with the requirements

  • To the extent applicable, understand and manage Laboratory insurance coverage, including renewal applications in consultation with an outside broker and in coordination with other relevant departments

  • Assist with Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) requests as needed

  • Maintain all OGC files, documents, and resources and help to identify paths to modernize and update OGC filing and knowledge management systems

  • Manage engagements with external counsel, including initial engagement letters, invoice review, and payment processing; coordinate with relevant OGC and DOE attorneys as necessary

  • Perform factual research and, with assistance, legal research

  • Perform records research

  • Prepare written reports and PowerPoint presentations for training

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in related business field or equivalent experience, generally based on the basis of 2:1 (experience: college) years, plus four years related work experience. Additional education in fields specifically related to the position requirements may offset qualifying experience

  • Ability to write, edit, and proofread content (articles, Lab-wide messages, business reports, presentations), work closely with subject matter experts and management, and develop strategies to achieve management goals via a variety of communications (website, videos, articles, emails, etc.)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to identify and resolve problems within own area of responsibility

  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal and written communications

  • Demonstrated ability to show initiative and determine priorities

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint) and familiarity with other commonly used tools and platforms (e.g., DocuSign, Zoom, Adobe Acrobat, etc.)

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • General familiarity with environmental laws and regulations, litigation procedure, contracts, corporate governance, and/or ethics

  • Paralegal or legal assistant training or experience

  • Ability to work with a variety of customers and create effective communications for targeted audiences

  • This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship   

  • This position is eligible for consideration of a flexible work arrangement. Hybrid (on-site 4 days/work-from-home 1 day)

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $82950 - $103650 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
