Software Development Engineer III

Our Technology Team partners with teams across Expedia Group to create innovative products, services, and tools to deliver high-quality experiences for travelers, partners, and our employees. A singular technology platform powered by data and machine learning provides secure, differentiated, and personalized experiences that drive loyalty and traveler satisfaction.

Introduction to the Team

Expedia Group is revolutionizing the way people search for and book travel. As part of Product & Technology, the Distribution and Supply Tech - Inventory team builds the platform that ingests, stores, and distributes lodging rates and availability data across all Expedia Group brands. Using cloud technologies and modern engineering practices, we power travel shopping and booking experiences on a global scale.

In this role, you will:

  • Design, build, test, and deliver reliable software solutions across services and domains, applying strong coding fundamentals, low-level design, API design, and data modeling practices.

  • Own technical execution for complex components and services, translating business and product needs into scalable, maintainable engineering outcomes.

  • Contribute to system design and architecture decisions, balancing performance, availability, security, and operational excellence in production environments.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, improve service health through monitoring and automation, and drive continuous improvements in quality, resilience, and developer efficiency.

  • Collaborate effectively with engineers and cross-functional partners to deliver end-to-end solutions, sharing technical knowledge and contributing across multiple technology areas as needed.

  • Safely integrate and operate AI/ML-enabled solutions that improve outcomes, including familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field; or equivalent related professional experience.

  • 5+ years of software development experience building and supporting production systems.

  • Demonstrated ownership of design, development, and operation of services or multiple components within a domain, with accountability for code quality, testing, and operational reliability.

  • Strong technical foundation in software engineering, including object-oriented or modern programming languages, low-level system design, API design, data modeling, and debugging distributed systems.

  • Experience working in cloud-based and service-oriented environments with version control, CI/CD practices, monitoring, and secure engineering fundamentals.

  • Experience in JVM technologies, specifically Kotlin and functional programming.

  • Experience with SQL (Aurora) and NoSQL databases (DynamoDB, MongoDB, DocumentDB)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience leading technical delivery for complex initiatives, influencing design decisions, and improving engineering practices within a team or domain.

  • Demonstrated success building scalable, high-availability systems and driving operational excellence through observability, automation, and performance optimization.

  • Strong judgment using data and metrics to identify issues, prioritize improvements, and inform technical decisions.

  • Experience contributing across the full stack or multiple technical domains, adapting quickly to new technologies and business problem spaces.

  • Experience evaluating or implementing AI/ML-enabled capabilities in software products, and using AI-driven development tools or workflows to improve engineering outcomes.

  • Experience working effectively in decentralized or geographically distributed teams.
