L625 - Software Driven Systems Engineering, within the L620 Systems Engineering Technical Division, focuses on software-driven systems engineering, digital engineering, modeling and simulation, and rapid prototyping to improve sponsor outcomes. MITRE is seeking a Group Leader for Rapid Digital Prototyping to stand up and lead a new technical group that delivers proofs of concept, reference implementations, engineering models, and reusable artifacts across the systems engineering lifecycle. This is a formal people-leadership role with direct reports; the Group Leader will manage, coach, and develop staff while shaping high-impact technical work with sponsors and department leadership.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, mentor, and develop direct reports in rapid digital prototyping, software-intensive systems engineering, MBSE, and modeling and simulation; provide performance management, coaching, career development, staffing, and recruiting support.
- Establish and grow the Rapid Digital Prototyping group within L625, building a culture centered on technical quality, collaboration, innovation, inclusion, and sponsor impact.
- Shape and deliver sponsor work that uses prototypes, models, and reusable digital engineering artifacts to accelerate acquisition, modernization, mission engineering, architecture evolution, integration, and transition.
- Guide the group in applying software prototypes, model-based systems engineering, system architecture, requirements engineering, modeling and simulation, and system-of-systems engineering to inform sponsor decisions.
- Increase the use of modeling throughout the SELC, including advanced modeling and simulation to improve complex requirements, design, trade studies, verification strategies, and stakeholder understanding.
- Promote reuse of frameworks, reference architectures, starter kits, reusable model assets, prototype components, and engineering knowledge to scale impact across programs.
- Collaborate across MITRE with software engineering, systems engineering, test and evaluation, mission engineering, platform/infrastructure, and technical leadership communities to strengthen common methods and capabilities.
Group Leader Requirements
- This Group Leader position includes formal responsibility for managing direct reports. The selected candidate will be accountable for performance management, career development, staff engagement, work assignment and staffing support, recruiting and hiring, onboarding, feedback, and fostering an inclusive, high-performing group environment.
- The Group Leader will balance people leadership with technical leadership, sponsor engagement, and work shaping in partnership with the Department Manager and other MITRE leaders.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related technical discipline and 8+ years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
- Demonstrated experience leading technical teams, projects, or groups in a matrixed engineering environment.
- Experience managing, mentoring, coaching, or developing staff, including performance feedback or career development responsibilities.
- Significant experience in one or more of the following: systems engineering, software engineering, model-based systems engineering, digital engineering, system architecture, modeling and simulation, system-of-systems engineering, or rapid prototyping.
- Demonstrated ability to translate ambiguous mission or sponsor needs into executable technical approaches, prototypes, models, or engineering products.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with sponsors, senior leadership, and multidisciplinary technical teams.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance if required for future assignments.
- Per the U.S. Government’s eligibility requirements, you must be a U.S Citizen to be considered for a security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in a relevant technical discipline.
- Prior experience as a Group Leader, Task Leader, Project Leader, Chief Engineer, Product Owner, technical lead, or equivalent technical leadership role.
- Deep experience with MBSE and digital engineering tools and methods, such as Cameo/MagicDraw, Rhapsody, SysML, UAF, DoDAF, model libraries, or reusable digital engineering assets.
- Experience using prototypes and digital models to influence acquisition, modernization, experimentation, test, integration, transition, or operational decision-making.
- Experience with modern software prototyping languages, frameworks, and practices such as Python, Java, TypeScript/JavaScript, C++, C#, APIs, microservices, DevSecOps, CI/CD, containerization, cloud-native engineering, or platform engineering.
- Experience with system-of-systems engineering, mission engineering, advanced modeling and simulation, requirements engineering, architecture development, and integration planning.
- Demonstrated success creating reusable engineering assets, starter kits, frameworks, reference implementations, prototype components, or model-based products that scale impact across programs.
- Experience building collaborations across organizational boundaries and shaping sponsor work in defense, civilian, health, intelligence, homeland security, aviation, or related mission domains.
