The Risk Manager plays a critical role in protecting Novant Health's patients, team members, providers, and organizational assets through proactive clinical risk management, event investigation, and risk mitigation strategies.

Reporting to the Director of Risk Management, this position serves as a trusted consultant and subject matter expert across the organization, partnering closely with clinical and operational leaders to identify, investigate, analyze, and mitigate potential risks that impact patient safety, regulatory compliance, and organizational integrity.

This position is ideal for an experienced healthcare professional with a strong clinical background who thrives in complex situations, enjoys investigative work, and is passionate about improving patient safety and healthcare quality.

The successful candidate will independently manage a portfolio of risk events, conduct comprehensive investigations, identify trends and opportunities for improvement, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support a culture of safety throughout the organization.

What You'll Do

Lead Clinical Risk Investigations

  • Review and assess all assigned event reports submitted through Novant Health's electronic event reporting system within established timeframes.
  • Investigate actual and potential risk events involving patients, providers, team members, and organizational operations.
  • Conduct detailed reviews of medical records, clinical documentation, policies, procedures, and other relevant materials to evaluate risk exposure.
  • Interview providers, leaders, and team members as part of investigative and fact-finding activities.
  • Develop event timelines, clinical summaries, and investigative reports to support risk analysis and decision-making.
  • Identify events that may meet criteria for Serious Reportable Events, Sentinel Events, Safety Events, claims, or other escalation pathways.

Partner with Leaders to Reduce Risk

  • Serve as a consultant to operational, clinical, and physician leaders on risk-related concerns and event management.
  • Provide guidance and recommendations to mitigate risk and prevent recurrence of adverse events.
  • Collaborate with departments to identify opportunities for process improvement and patient safety enhancement.
  • Support organizational efforts to proactively identify emerging risks before they result in harm or regulatory exposure.

Enhance Patient Safety Through Risk Mitigation and Organizational Excellence

Monitor and analyze event reporting trends to identify recurring themes, patterns, and opportunities for intervention.

  • Utilize data from event reporting systems to support risk assessments, performance improvement initiatives, and leadership reporting.
  • Participate in committees and multidisciplinary workgroups focused on patient safety, quality, regulatory readiness, and risk reduction.
  • Support complaint and grievance management processes in partnership with Patient Experience and Patient Partnerships teams.

Collaborate Across the Health System

This role works closely with numerous departments and leaders throughout Novant Health, including:

The Risk Manager serves as a key resource and trusted advisor, helping teams navigate complex situations while balancing patient care, regulatory requirements, and organizational risk.

Educate and Support Team Members

  • Educate team members and leaders on event reporting processes, risk management principles, and best practices.
  • Provide consultation regarding documentation, event reporting, and appropriate escalation pathways.
  • Assist in preparing leaders, providers, and team members for regulatory surveys, investigations, and external reviews.
  • Promote a culture of transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement throughout the organization.

Participate in On-Call Coverage

  • Share responsibility for 24/7/365 risk management coverage through a rotating on-call schedule.
  • Serve as a resource for leaders and providers during emergent risk situations, providing guidance, support, and escalation as needed.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure timely and appropriate responses to urgent events.

All other duties as assigned.

  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Exhibits self-direction, independent practice, and excellent time management skills.

  • Strong understanding of healthcare operations, regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and patient safety principles.
  • Excellent written communication and documentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications/Skills

  • Graduate degree
  • Minimum of two years experience in leadership and/or Risk management
  • Certification in risk management (CPHRM), Patient Safety (CPPS), Quality (CPHQ) or comparable.
  • Experience investigating clinical events, patient safety concerns, adverse events, or organizational risk.
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting medical records and clinical documentation.
  • Ability to independently manage complex investigations and make sound recommendations.
  • Experience utilizing event reporting or risk management systems.
  • Experience navigating EPIC.
