Job description

We are looking for a Product Lead Air Traffic Control within COO Risk

Are you passionate about driving meaningful change, data and risk management? ING is looking for an ambitious and results-driven Product Lead ATC to join the End-to-end Implementation CoE within COO Risk. This role is your chance to take ownership of a strategic transformation roadmap and lead initiatives that shape the future of risk management at the heart of the bank.

The opportunity

COO Risk sits right at the heart of the Bank’s operations. We translate our rather complex banking business exposures into impact on risk weighted assets and provisions in line with the constantly changing business desires and the latest regulatory requirements. We also provide important insights in NFR and Compliance topics and cater for corresponding regulatory reporting needs.

COO Risk delivers baseline and change activities for the Risk Organization with the purpose to drive our partners to maximize value in a safe & compliant environment. We play a critical role at ING and service all business lines, CROs and COOs of the Bank. COO Risk is committed to take explicit ownership of the end-to-end execution of regulatory transformation initiatives.

To deliver on these ambitious promises, we are looking for a Product lead who has an end-to-end strategic focus around our services and leads our squads in terms of clear prioritization, accountability and capabilities. The Product Lead is a position where all elements of a product come together, the what and the how, with an end-to-end transformation responsibility.

Purpose of the Role

The Product Lead Air Traffic Control is responsible for leading the AI strategy, implementation, and advisory capability within the CRO Risk division and is also responsible for the QBR process, the HR strategy and the Financials of COO Risk. Act as the primary bridge between risk domain expertise and AI/ML technology, enabling the division to adopt scalable AI solutions that strengthen risk management processes, improve efficiency, and comply with regulatory requirements.

In addition the team is orchestrating key internal processes such as cross-domain Portfolio Management and set up of project governance and pipeline management.

Key Responsibilities

AI Strategy & Roadmap

  • Define and maintain the short- and long-term AI strategy for the CRO Risk division, aligned with enterprise AI priorities and risk appetite.
  • Evaluate emerging AI/ML techniques and assess applicability to risk management use cases (credit risk, market risk, operational risk, model risk).
  • Build and maintain the AI opportunity pipeline: identify, prioritise, and sequence AI initiatives across the risk function.

Process Analysis & Automation

  • Decompose risk processes end-to-end to identify automation potential, bottlenecks, and areas where AI can add measurable value.
  • Recommend automation methodologies and tooling appropriate to each use case, including GenAI, classical ML, RPA, and hybrid approaches.
  • Translate process analysis into concrete implementation proposals with clear scope, effort estimates, and expected business outcomes.

Solution Development & Delivery

  • Hands-on design and development of AI-powered applications using the Microsoft stack (Copilot Studio, Power Platform, Azure AI Services) and Google tools available to the division.
  • Build prototypes, MVPs, and production-grade solutions; own the full lifecycle from ideation through deployment and iteration.
  • Ensure solutions meet enterprise architecture, security, and data governance standards.

Advisory & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as the go-to AI advisor for senior risk management, translating complex technical concepts into actionable business recommendations.
  • Advise risk leadership on how to effectively adopt and scale Microsoft and Google AI tooling across the division.
  • Present business cases, feasibility assessments, and scaling recommendations to senior stakeholders and governance forums.

AI Regulatory & Governance

  • Maintain deep working knowledge of AI regulatory frameworks (EU AI Act, ECB/EBA guidance, internal model risk policies) and ensure all AI initiatives are compliant.
  • Contribute to the development and enforcement of AI governance standards within the risk function.
  • Support regulatory interactions and audits related to AI/ML usage in risk.

Evaluation & Scaling

  • Evaluate incoming AI ideas and proposals: assess feasibility, expected ROI, data readiness, and alignment with divisional priorities.
  • Develop business cases for AI initiatives, including cost-benefit analysis, resource requirements, and scaling pathways.
  • Define KPIs and success metrics for AI implementations; monitor and report on outcomes post-deployment.

Team Leadership & Upskilling

  • Lead a small team of AI specialists; set direction, coach, and develop team members.
  • Drive AI literacy and upskilling across the broader risk organisation through training, workshops, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Foster a culture of experimentation, responsible AI use, and continuous learning.

How to succeed

We are looking for a leader who takes things on and makes things happen; who is passionate about helping others to be successful; and has a knack for always being a step ahead. You are a naturally collaborative person who listens and invests in others to achieve common goals. You love to challenge the status quo and are eager to propose creative solutions to problems.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Master's degree in a quantitative field (Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Engineering) or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in AI/ML, data science, or advanced analytics, with at least 3 years in a banking or financial services risk environment.
  • 5+ year of proven experience in program management of critical and / or regulatory programs.
  • Strong understanding of risk management disciplines (credit risk, market risk, operational risk) and the underlying processes and data.
  • Demonstrated ability to break down complex business processes and design AI-driven solutions from concept to production.
  • Hands-on experience building applications with Microsoft Copilot Studio, Power Platform, Azure AI Services, and/or Google Cloud AI tools.
  • Working knowledge of AI regulatory frameworks including the EU AI Act, ECB/EBA supervisory expectations, and internal model risk governance.
  • Experience developing and presenting business cases, feasibility studies, and ROI analyses to senior leadership.
  • Track record of leading or mentoring small technical teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with GenAI architectures: RAG, agentic workflows, context engineering, fine-tuning.
  • Familiarity with ING's technology ecosystem and enterprise architecture standards.
  • Experience with automation frameworks beyond AI (RPA, workflow orchestration, low-code/no-code platforms).
  • Exposure to regulatory examinations or audits involving AI/ML models.
  • Relevant certifications (Azure AI Engineer, Google Cloud ML Engineer, or similar).

Key Competencies

  • Strategic thinking with the ability to translate high-level vision into concrete deliverables.
  • Strong stakeholder management: able to communicate complex technical topics to non-technical senior leaders.
  • Problem-solving mindset with a bias toward action and pragmatic solutions.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to operate effectively in a matrixed organisation.
  • Collaborative leadership style that balances autonomy with alignment.
