About Newmont

Founded in 1921, Newmont is one of the world’s leading gold producers—known for putting safety first and for creating an environment where people can do their best work. We embrace inclusion and diversity, invest in innovation, recognise high performance and build the next generation of leaders.

Your impact

Reporting to the Director, Health, Safety and Environment, in the permanent position of Lead, Health and Safety, you will play a pivotal role in shaping a safe, healthy and high-performing work environment by adapting and implementing industrial hygiene and safety programs that align with Newmont’s enterprise strategy, regulatory requirements and industry best practice. This is an opportunity to influence how safety is embedded across our remote Tanami mine operations by driving continuous improvement, strengthening our safety culture and ensuring our people and work environment are protected to the highest standard.

As part of our team you will

  • Lead the execution of audits, inspections, and verifications to identify hazards, ensure compliance, and drive corrective and preventive actions
  • Analyse incidents, accidents, and near misses, ensuring high-quality root cause investigations are completed and effective strategies are implemented to prevent recurrence
  • Analyse and interpret health and safety performance data (leading and lagging indicators) to identify trends, emerging risks, and improvement opportunities
  • Provide technical support to operational teams on hazard identification, risk assessment, and the implementation of effective controls
  • Support risk-based management of change processes to ensure health and safety risks are identified, assessed, and controlled prior to implementation
  • Engage and collaborate with Lead Health and Safety peers to share learnings, solve common challenges, and drive continuous improvement in health and safety performance
  • Lead the deployment of health and safety programs and build leadership capability to drive safe operational outcomes
  • Lead, coach and develop a high performing Health and Safety team that consistently delivers against site and functional priorities and demonstrates accountability for the health and hygiene portfolio
  • Lead industrial hygiene programs, including workplace and exposure monitoring, analysis of data, and implementation of effective mitigation measures
  • Drive the effective implementation and continuous improvement of health and safety management systems, ensuring alignment with site, business unit and enterprise requirements, data integrity, compliance, and performance monitoring
  • Establish and maintain a Health and Safety representative program and drive workforce engagement and participation in safety initiatives
  • Monitor and support contractor health and safety performance, ensuring alignment with site standards and verification processes
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of regulatory and legislative requirements and ensure compliance with site requirements
  • Oversee the implementation of process safety risk management plans and controls
  • Provide leadership support for the Medical and Emergency Response Officer portfolio during periods of absence and perform delegate on-site HSE leadership responsibilities as required.

Prerequisites for your success in the role

  • Tertiary qualifications in Science, Engineering, Safety, or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety systems, industry standards, regulations and compliance requirements specific to mining and/or heavy industry
  • Advanced capability in health and safety risk management including hazard identification, risk assessment, critical control implementation and incident investigation using structured root-cause methodologies
  • Knowledge in industrial hygiene monitoring, exposure sampling, interpreting data patterns, validating diagnoses and applying evidence-based mitigation strategies preferred
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work within established systems, interpret complex data, identify patterns and apply structured methodologies to develop safe and effective solutions
  • Highly developed people and collaboration skills including team leadership, conflict resolution, stakeholder engagement, self-awareness, influencing, coaching and fostering an inclusive, high-trust team environment
  • Full and unrestricted eligibility for employment in Australia.

Your work environment

Newmont has fully owned and operated the Tanami mine since 2002. The mine operates in the remote Tanami Desert of Australia. The mine and plant are located on Aboriginal freehold land that is owned by the Warlpiri people and managed on their behalf by the Central Desert Aboriginal Lands Trust. Tanami is a fly-in-fly-out operation in one of Australia’s most remote locations. Tanami is 270 km from its closest neighbours, the remote Aboriginal community of Yuendumu.

This permanent position will be based on-site at the Tanami mine located in the remote Northern Territory working on a fly in fly out roster (8:6:8:6:4:3) from Perth, Darwin, Brisbane or Alice Springs. Mine village accommodation will be provided.

Full and unrestricted eligibility for employment in Australia will be essential.

Join us and unearth your potential in a global company that is at the forefront of shaping the future of the mining industry.

Applications close 3 July 2026.
