Job description

Are you ready to lead the design and delivery of secure, mission-critical messaging systems in one of the UK’s most unique environments?

Following continued internal growth and an expansion of our SharePoint capability, our Messaging team is looking for a Lead Messaging Engineer to help shape and deliver secure communication platforms that underpin national security operations.

Working in a highly governed and collaborative team, you will take ownership of the full lifecycle – from design and build through to deployment and ongoing management – across a suite of On-Premise messaging technologies.

This role is ideally suited to someone who thrives in structured, regulated environments and enjoys working to tight service level agreements.

You’ll also have the opportunity to cross-skill across the wider messaging capability, making this an excellent fit for candidates with a background in military messaging or other highly secure communication systems.

Due to the secure nature of the work, this is an office-based role in Gloucestershire. We do, however, support flexible working patterns where possible, including compressed hours such as working five days over four.

What you'll be doing

  • Designing, building, configuring and deploying secure, on-premise messaging and collaboration systems.
  • Managing and maintaining critical platforms, ensuring performance, resilience and compliance within strict service level agreements. Providing advanced fault finding, diagnosis and resolution across infrastructure and messaging technologies.
  • Leading or contributing to technical delivery using recognised project methodologies within a governed environment.
  • Driving continuous improvement, supportability and cost optimisation across infrastructure and messaging services.
  • Sharing expertise across the team, supporting cross-skilling and capability development within messaging technologies.

What you’ll bring

  • Strong experience with Microsoft Exchange On-Premise technologies, with a deep understanding of modern messaging strategy and evolution.
  • Hands-on experience with SPSE (SharePoint Server Subscription Edition).
  • Extensive experience working with Skype for Business in enterprise environments.
  • Strong technical infrastructure expertise, including administration, troubleshooting, clustering and hardware evaluation within regulated environments.
  • Proven experience operating within structured governance frameworks and delivering to tight service level agreements.

It would be great if you had

  • Experience with X400 messaging systems, particularly in military or highly secure environments.
  • Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert accreditation or equivalent, with additional certifications across related technologies.
  • Strong documentation skills, with the ability to produce both end-user guidance and operational procedures.

Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent. Location: Gloucestershire (office-based due to security requirements). Security Clearance Level: Developed Vetting (DV). Internal Recruiter: Paul. Salary: Up to £75,000 depending on experience. Benefits: £5,400 car allowance, 25 days annual leave with the option to buy additional days, private medical, life assurance, pension, and generous flexible benefits fund.
