Job description
We are searching for a highly motivated Senior Scientist I to join our Analytical Development team at AbbVie Bioresearch Center in Worcester, MA. Our team is responsible for the development, qualification, and execution of analytical methods to provide product and process understanding for biological entities from discovery through commercial stages. As a Senior Scientist I, you will be a part of the Analytical Characterization Group (ACG) within the Analytical Development department. ACG focuses on providing routine, investigative, and in-depth characterization as well as proteomics analyses of AbbVie's biologics to support product and process development for early-phase, late-phase, and commercial programs using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS), spectroscopy, and various other biophysical characterization assays. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and performance of analytical assays and will contribute to the continuous improvement and innovation within ACG and the Analytical Development department. The incumbent operates with a high degree of independence, contributes project science in their area of expertise, and develops productive collaborations across disciplines.
Responsibilities:
- Independently perform LC-MS analyses (e.g., intact, reduced, sub-unit, peptide mapping, and disulfide bond mapping) of AbbVie's biologics to provide sequence verification, post-translational modification profiles, sequence variant levels, and disulfide bond profiles.
- Independently perform separation methods (e.g., fractionation of variants) and biophysical methods of AbbVie's biologics to support characterization studies.
- Design and execute experiments for method development and/or investigations.
- Generate and communicate precise, reliable, and reproducible data in a timely manner.
- Organize and document experiments and results in an electronic laboratory notebook; author and review protocols, method development reports, and technical characterization reports.
- Represent the Analytical Development department in cross-functional program teams as characterization lead for AbbVie's biologics in development pipeline.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, provide troubleshooting, and coordinate services/PMs.
- Routinely demonstrate scientific initiative and creativity in research or development activities.
- Highly autonomous and productive in performing laboratory research or method development, requiring only minimal direction from or interaction with supervisor.
- Direct mentorship of junior scientists and others in the lab.
- PhD or Masters in chemistry, biology, biochemistry or related technical discipline with typically 0–3 (PhD) or 8+ (MS) years of relevant experience in a biotech/pharmaceutical industry setting.
- Hands-on experience with protein mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis and protein biophysical characterization
- Strong fundamental understanding of protein structure, post-translational modifications, and analytical methods used for protein characterization.
- Experience with bioinformatics tools to process and analyze mass spectrometry data.
- Proficient with Windows 10 and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
- Excellent written communication, oral communication, organization, and multitasking skills.
- Hardworking and motivated to drive both efficiency and quality in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
- Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, and appropriate handling of materials.
