What you’ll be doing

As Senior Counsel, Marketing, you’ll provide legal advice and support on commercial contracts, marketing-related initiatives, and retail banking marking related matters, while partnering closely with business and functional leaders across the organization. Working as part of the Personal Banking legal team, you’ll advise on matters involving consumer protection legislation, the Bank Act, Advertising Standards and related competition law requirements as well as applicable codes of conduct, with a focus on practical, solution-oriented guidance. You’ll support the development and delivery of marketing and advertising strategies across products and services, including in regards to campaigns by negotiating agreements with sponsors and agencies, as well as advising on legal and regulatory requirements, trademarks, collateral, contests and helping business partners manage legal, regulatory, and reputational risk. You’ll also provide trusted counsel on complex or sensitive matters and contribute to the broader success of the Legal Department through collaboration and strong partnership.

At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. You’ll have the flexibility to manage your work activities within a hybrid work arrangement where you’ll spend 1-3 days per week on-site, while other days will be remote.

How you'll succeed

  • Provide legal advice and counsel - Negotiate, draft, and advise on commercial contracts and related business arrangements in support of Personal Banking and marketing-related initiatives, including agreements with suppliers, partners, agencies, and other third parties. Provide practical legal advice grounded in the Bank Act, consumer protection legislation, and applicable codes of conduct.

  • Support business initiatives - Partner with business and functional teams from concept through execution to support products, services, campaigns, and other strategic initiatives. Identify legal considerations early, assess risk, and provide recommendations that enable the business to move forward effectively.

  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments - Stay current on developments in the Bank Act, consumer protection laws, regulations, and relevant case law pertaining to marketing, advertising and contest law. Assess the potential impact of changes on CIBC and help develop practical approaches to address evolving legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Build strong relationships - Develop trusted partnerships across CIBC by maintaining open communication, understanding business priorities, and anticipating legal support needs. Deliver clear guidance and training that helps internal partners make informed decisions.

  • Collaborate across the Legal Department - Work closely with lawyers and leaders across the Legal Department in a managed matrix environment. Share knowledge, contribute to team objectives, and help resolve issues with broader organizational impact through coordinated legal support.

Who you are

  • You have strong legal experience. You bring significant relevant experience gained in the financial industry or other highly regulated industry, a comparable large organization, or a top-tier law firm. You have a strong track record of providing sound legal judgment on contract drafting, negotiations, complex legal issues, and the management of legal and reputational risk.

  • You have relevant subject matter knowledge. You’re familiar with the foundational principles applicable to the law of advertising and marketing in Canada, familiarity with the Bank Act and consumer protection laws, and you’re comfortable applying that knowledge in a practical business context. Experience supporting retail banking, marketing, cards, or other consumer-facing products and services is an asset.

  • You’re a trusted advisor. You use strong independent judgment, broad legal knowledge, and professionalism to provide clear, practical advice. You’re comfortable supporting a range of stakeholders, including business leaders and senior executives, on both day-to-day matters and complex or sensitive issues.

  • You’re a certified professional. You have been called to the Bar in Ontario and are a member in good standing.

  • You understand that success is in the details. You notice what others may miss, and your critical thinking skills help inform your decision-making. You bring a careful, thoughtful approach to legal analysis and risk assessment.

  • Values matter to you. You bring your real self to work, and you live our values - trust, teamwork, and accountability.
