Position Specific Summary
The Public Information Officer position at the Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) serves as a liaison between the local media and the Department. This position is responsible for coordinating and disseminating public information through a variety of traditional and social media platforms while also utilizing video, print and graphic materials to support and increase overall awareness of the department’s projects, programs and operations.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Department Director or designee. This position leads and instructs the daily operational work of public information personnel in the Strategic Communications Division.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Acts as a liaison between the department and the public, disseminating information through various channels such as press releases, social media, and official statements, written and delivered for the purpose of ensuring transparent and reliable information. Ensures the public receives timely communication about transportation projects impacting their ability to move through the City of Tucson.
- Builds and maintains relationships with journalists and media outlets to facilitate accurate reporting and manage the organization’s public image. Develops and implements strategies to promote positive public perception of the organization.
- Offers direction and mentorship to the Strategic Communication team regarding the departmental duties, obligations, and objectives. Assigns responsibilities, interprets policies and protocols, sets priorities, provides training, and oversight. Reviews social media posts, press releases, and other public notices for accuracy and clarity.
- Conducts and coordinates outreach activities to educate the public about important issues, programs and services provided by the organization. Helps support other divisions in their outreach efforts including delivery of voter approved initiatives.
- Gathers information, narratives, and data from senior leadership team members and various department divisions to edit and produce the annual report.
- Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor's degree in related fieldExperience: Four (4) years directly related experience
Equivalency: Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis
License/Certifications: A valid and unrestricted Driver License
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field.
Experience producing written material used for press releases, social media posts, and publications.
Experience working with mainstream media to include being interviewed by video and print media.
Professional experience developing, publishing, posting and otherwise distributing timely information through social media sources including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.
Bilingual in English and Spanish
