A DAY IN THE LIFE:

The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist I assists in the implementing the company environmental safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations. Maintains Safety Data Sheet Database and chemical inventory. Performs periodic safety inspections. Monitors hazardous and non-hazardous waste removal vendors and assist in wastes minimization. Collects and compiles environmental health and safety metrics. Supports ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. Supports workers’ compensation program and assists with claims management. Recommends corrective action where environmental health and safety hazards exist. Supports the safety culture for Tandem.

Environmental Health and Safety Specialist I's are also responsible for:

Environmental

  • Supports environmental health related activities in compliance with ISO 14001 Environmental Management System as well as with Federal, State, and local environmental regulations. 
  • Supports ISO 14001 Environmental Management System audits
  • Contributes to the site efforts on hazard identification, risk assessment and control.
  • Helps maintain and administer the Tandem Blood Borne Pathogens Program.
  • Supports Tandem’s Hazardous Communication Program.
  • Maintains hazardous and non-hazardous waste management and minimization.
  • Performs weekly hazardous waste inspections
  • Routinely collects and compiles environmental metrics (water, energy, waste streams, carbon footprint)
  • Maintains accuracy of Safety Data Sheet database.
  • Conducts and maintains accurate chemical inventory.

Safety

  • Supports occupational safety related activities in compliance with Federal, State, and local safety regulations. 
  • Engages and works cooperatively with site employees, supervisors, and managers to meet safety goals and continuously improve safety performance.
  • Supports workers’ compensation program including reporting work related injuries and illnesses to the carrier.
  • Assists with the development of safety and ergonomics training.
  • Supports Injury and Illness Prevention Program.
  • Performs ergonomic evaluations
  • Provides safety training records for QSR requirements.
  • Ensures that causes and contributing factors are identified and that appropriate corrective and preventive action (CAPA) are identified, assigned, and tracked to completion.
  • Maintains accurate health, safety, and accident records
  • Supports the development and maintenance of facility emergency preparedness and response plans and ensure that all affected employees receive training as needed.
  • Assists routine fire drills, government safety inspections, permits, and certifications.
  • Maintains prescription safety glasses and safety footwear programs.
  • Ensures work is performed in compliance with company policies including Privacy/HIPAA and other regulatory, legal, and safety requirements.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

WHEN & WHERE YOU’LL WORK:

Onsite: This position is primarily onsite and open to candidates located in San Diego, California. Equipment for the role will be provided and training will occur onsite. 

Schedule: This position will work Monday - Friday from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM PST. Employees will work 4 days onsite and 1 day remotely.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

Knowledge, skills & abilities:

  • Highly effective team player and collaborator. Track record of partnering with and engaging others to implement change. Visible and dynamic champion for EHS.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
  • A positive approach to people and problem solutions along with a strong sense of discretion and the ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for effective reporting and presentation.

Minimum certifications/educational level:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A/B.S.) in related field or combination of equivalent education and applicable work experience. Coursework or degree in Safety or Industrial Hygiene, preferred.
  • Holds or is working towards professional safety certification, e.g., CIH, CSP, ASP, etc.

Minimum experience:

  • 2 or more years of Health and Safety experience in a GMP manufacturing environment is required.
  • Experience with hazardous waste management and handling is a plus

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

The starting base hourly pay range for this position is $28.50 - $33.00. Base pay will vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and may also fluctuate depending on candidate’s location and the overall job market. In addition to base pay, Tandem offers a competitive compensation package that includes bonus and a robust benefits package.
