Position Summary

Duke University Health System is seeking a strategic financial leader to serve as the Director of Finance – Strategic Financial Planning and Budget. Reporting directly to the AVP of Budgets, Treasury, and Cash Management, this critical role is responsible for the clinical operational and capital budgeting, as well as the overarching financial planning for DUHS.

The Director will establish and oversee budgeting and planning processes that culminate in the publication of the Annual Financial Plan. By actively coordinating with operating unit leadership and DUHS senior executives, this position aims to increase the speed, consistency, and effectiveness of management’s financial decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Leadership

Provide strategic leadership and assume responsibility for the coordination, development, and delivery of the health system's financial plan and budget.

Manage, plan, and organize a robust financial planning and budgeting process covering both clinical and administrative activities.

Initiate and prepare clear, effective, and informative analyses that accurately describe the financial position, outlook, and strategic direction of the health system.

Provide forward-thinking leadership on future process improvements, including the development of new analytical approaches, practices, and the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) workflows.

Operational & Financial Execution

Execute the functional portion of the annual financial plan process, effectively managing both internal and external teams.

Utilize financial modeling and scenario planning to guide the corporate budget process and monitor the administrative financial burden.

Oversee, utilize, and support the implementation of financial software designed to yield complex analyses of financial results and projected future earnings based on chosen assumptions, targets, and capacity constraints.

Prepare comprehensive compensation plan analyses to support the broader financial planning process.

Coordinate with entity finance teams to support FTE crosswalks and measure year-over-year financial impacts.

Liaise with Duke Connected Care to establish links between the activities of the Population Health Management Office (PHMO) and budget assumptions.

Stakeholder Engagement & Team Management

Lead the development of meaningful financial and budgetary deliverables for senior leadership, coordinating with industry and subject matter experts to produce highly effective presentation materials.

Participate in—and often lead—strategic business opportunities, including multidisciplinary service line and departmental committees requiring clear communication and presentation skills.

Lead, mentor, and supervise a professional staff of two to four (2-4) direct reports, including financial analysts and managers, guiding them through system-wide recurring and non-recurring projects.

Participate in the development of DUHS financial policies, demonstrating a deep understanding of strategic direction, key initiatives, and success factors.

Complete special projects and executive deliverables as assigned.

Candidate Qualifications & Skills

Required Experience

A minimum of seven (7) years of related financial planning and budgeting experience.

Demonstrated ability to perform and thrive in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented environment.

Extensive experience within healthcare finance.

Strong traditional and modern IT skills, with a demonstrated expertise in creating highly detailed analytical and presentation materials for executive audiences.

Experience or a strong interest in developing and integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills into financial workflows.

Exceptional communication and organizational skills with an uncompromising attention to detail.
