Athletic Trainer

Job Group:

Professional & Scientific

Required Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree and 1 year of related experience. Current CPR/AED certification. Certified Athletic Trainer through the Board of Certification for Athletic Training (BOC). Must have, or obtain within 30 days of hire, and maintain licensure as a Licensed Athletic Trainer in the State of Iowa.

Job Description:

Be the difference behind every finish line—join Iowa State Athletics as a certified Athletic Trainer supporting our men’s and women’s cross country and track & field programs.

In this dynamic, high-impact role, you’ll help student-athletes train, compete, and recover at their best while playing a vital part in a collaborative sports performance and wellness team. From competition-day preparation to injury prevention and rehabilitation, you’ll work side-by-side with coaches, physicians, and strength staff to elevate both performance and care. This is more than a job, it’s an opportunity to shape the success, safety, and experience of Division I athletes in a fast-paced, supportive environment that values excellence in all aspects of their life.

What you’ll do

  • Administer comprehensive athletic training services—including prevention, testing, evaluation, treatment, emergency care, rehabilitation, physical conditioning, and medical referrals—for student‑athletes in assigned sports (initial assignment: men’s and women’s track/field and cross country; subject to change as needed).
  • Communicate and collaborate with physicians, athletic trainers, medical specialists, coaches, sports dietitians, mental health professionals, and strength and conditioning staff regarding injury status, treatment plans, and return-to-performance planning for student‑athletes.
  • Partner with physicians and other athletic health care personnel to optimize care and rehabilitation for injuries and illnesses, and distribute injury risk mitigation measures such as utilizing performance technologies, braces, appliances, and protective devices.
  • Analyze injury data to identify trends and recommend evidence‑based injury risk mitigation strategies.
  • Document all athletic health care activities using appropriate medical record‑keeping practices in compliance with the State of Iowa Code.
  • Provide clinical supervision for athletic training students.
  • Serve as a Preceptor for the athletic training education program.
  • Perform all responsibilities in accordance with NCAA, Big 12, and university policies.

The ideal candidates bring strong technical, time‑management, communication, and problem‑solving skills. This role is physically demanding and requires the ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs. Candidates must be able to work flexible schedules that include regular evenings, weekends, and overnight travel with team(s). A demonstrated commitment to multiculturalism and to supporting a diverse student body is essential.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience providing athletic training services to male and female track/field and cross country athletes at the elite or collegiate level.

Experience delivering comprehensive rehabilitation and reconditioning for athletic injuries, including post-surgical cases.

Experience utilizing performance technologies specific to injury-risk mitigation and return-to-play processes.

Experience in the care and coordination of RED’s risk mitigation and management.

Certification as a Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) through the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

Experience supervising and mentoring athletic training students in clinical settings.
