Job description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Optometrist is responsible for providing comprehensive eye care services, including vision assessment, refraction, prescribing corrective lenses, and conducting specialized diagnostic eye examinations to detect and monitor ocular conditions. In addition, the Optometrist manages administrative and operational functions within the department, ensuring adherence to clinical standards and smooth service delivery.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Main Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive eye examinations, including objective and subjective refraction, cycloplegic refraction (where indicated), and vision assessments.

  • Conduct specialized diagnostic tests such as Visual Field, Color Vision, and Intraocular Pressure (IOP) measurements according to SOPs.

  • Perform slit-lamp biomicroscopy to examine the anterior and posterior segments of the eye for diagnostic and monitoring purposes.

  • Operate ophthalmic diagnostic instruments including Fundus Camera, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), A-Scan, and Pentacam for detailed corneal and retinal analysis.

  • Conduct cataract surgery assessments, including IOL power calculations, pre- and post-operative refractions, and biometry (IOL Master and A-Scan).

  • Assist ophthalmologists during diagnostic and treatment procedures, ensuring accurate data collection and reporting.

  • Consult patients regarding refractive findings and prescribe appropriate corrective lenses or contact lenses.

  • Provide patient education, counseling, and reassurance on vision-related conditions and post-treatment care.

  • Address and manage patient complaints in a professional manner to maintain patient satisfaction and service quality.

  • Obtain patient feedback and testimonials through surveys and follow-up consultations.

  • Assist in surgical planning and scheduling, including lens selection, calculation, and ordering.

  • Manage intraocular lens (IOL) stock and related ophthalmic supplies — monitor stock levels, perform stock checks, and coordinate stock return or exchange when necessary.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records in the hospital information system.

  • Perform administrative tasks such as patient registration, follow-up coordination, and basic housekeeping in clinical areas.

  • Ensure all clinic equipment is properly maintained and functioning in accordance with safety standards.

  • Monitor and report Optometry Service Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in a timely manner.

  • Participate in marketing activities (e.g., roadshows, in-house events), and other initiatives as assigned.

  • Perform dispensing and discharging of prescribed medications when necessary.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform any other responsibilities as assigned by immediate superior or hospital management

JOB REQUIREMENT

Education:

  • Bachelor of Optometry (Hons)

  • Registered with the Malaysian Optical Council (MOC) under the Optical Act 1991

Knowledge and Experiences:

  • Preferably 1 -3 years of working experience in related field.

  • Proficient knowledge of optometric principles, policies, and procedures
