Job description

The worldwide data management software market is massive (IDC forecasts it to be $138 billion by 2026). At MongoDB, we are transforming industries and empowering developers to build amazing apps that people use every day. We are the leading modern data platform and the first database provider to IPO in over 20 years. Join our team and be at the center of innovation and creativity.

MongoDB is seeking a Sr. Staff Software Engineer to join the Atlas Core Data Services organization. The organization is responsible for building MongoDB Atlas, our database as a service offering and fastest growing product, along with the API Platform and Developer Tools. Atlas allows users to deploy fault-tolerant, secure, globally distributed MongoDB clusters in just minutes.

The Atlas Core Data Services organization builds the software that manages the Atlas cluster infrastructure hosted on the three major cloud providers (AWS, Azure, and GCP), as well as the software that manages the MongoDB database hosted on that infrastructure. We are constantly challenged to design features that ensure Atlas clusters are secure, available, durable, and performant while running large-scale, critical workloads. The Sr. Staff Engineer in this role will drive innovation across the organization and the company, setting technical standards and direction that enable future growth and velocity. We are looking for engineers with the experience and high standards needed to lead at that scale.

Our organization champions a strong culture of inclusivity, diversity, and collaboration. If you want to be a deeply technical leader on a collaborative team that applies systems expertise to build the foundational infrastructure of a popular database, join us. Let's build a faster, more reliable, and highly scalable database platform together.

We are looking to speak to candidates who are based in Dublin for our hybrid working model.

Responsibilities

  • Define standards and vision for the mission-critical Atlas SaaS data platform, leading the architecture and implementation of components that drive performance, scalability, cost efficiency, and resiliency
  • Drive the technical design of new features from inception to market, with a focus on delivering high customer impact
  • Work closely with engineering, product, and design leadership, distinguished engineers, and peers to guide technical strategy, define product roadmaps, and advise on engineering complexity and inter-project dependencies
  • Oversee the implementation of large-scale, cross-organizational features from design through delivery
  • Handle production customer escalations from the Technical Support team and coach teammates to do the same
  • Write production-ready database code, improve the existing codebase, and mentor teammates to consistently raise the quality bar
  • Collaborate with team members to evolve the codebase, best practices, and design principles that underpin the Atlas platform
  • Ensure the codebase achieves a high standard for quality across security, durability, availability, performance, and maintainability
  • Drive AI engineering strategy within the Atlas Core Data Services organization to accelerate developer velocity at all levels of the engineering team
  • Interview candidates for advanced software engineering positions
  • Develop and maintain expertise in cutting-edge database developments from industry and academia

Success Measures

  • In the first month, you will have understood the high-level architecture of MongoDB Atlas, contributed to one or more projects at an IC level, and resolved bugs
  • In three months, you will have contributed to the development of a project slated for the next major release of MongoDB, and diagnosed and fixed a few customer or testing-reported issues
  • In six months, you will have taken on code review responsibilities and are involved in reviewing the design for new features
  • In twelve months, you will be leading the development of new features and initiatives, mentoring engineers on the team, and using your experience to drive the long-term technical roadmap of MongoDB Atlas

Candidate Profile

  • Solving complex problems at scale, and to high standards, excites you
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in designing, programming, debugging, and tuning distributed and/or highly concurrent C/C++/Java/Rust mission-critical software systems
  • Experience running latency-sensitive, high-throughput systems
  • Strong systems fundamentals, including multi-threaded programming, distributed systems at scale, and expert-level programming
  • Familiarity with database internals or building core components for data processing systems
  • Familiarity with a hosted database ecosystem and best practices
  • Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills and a strong desire to collaborate with colleagues and mentor engineers
  • Excellent time and project management skills, including the ability to make realistic assessments of project cost and complexity
  • A good understanding of information security management
