In this role, you will have the opportunity to serve as the first point of contact for our clients as well as provide legal clerical support to our attorneys.
About Us
The Maricopa Court Office of Public Defense Services assigns and oversees private attorneys contracted to represent indigent individuals in criminal, delinquency, dependency, mental health, and probate matters. We provide administrative support, financial oversight, integrated technology solutions and HR services to all five of Maricopa County’s Indigent Representation offices (Public Defender, Legal Defender, Legal Advocate, Public Advocate and Contract Counsel) in an effort to ensure indigent individuals have their fundamental rights protected and receive quality legal representation.

We Require
One year of clerical experience
High school diploma or GED
Post-secondary education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis
We Also Value
Clerical experience in a legal, court, criminal justice, or indigent defense setting
Bilingual English/Spanish skills
Job Contributions
Serves as a receptionist, managing incoming calls by screening, directing, and transferring to appropriate staff
Assists callers and in-person customers by looking up and relaying information regarding their assigned attorney, as well as upcoming court dates
Monitors court calendar and notifies attorneys of client arrival
Assigns attorneys to unrepresented clients in coordination with attorneys and assignment staff
Enters assignments and payment information in the case management system
Performs initial conflict checks
Builds and organizes both hardcopy and electronic files
Performs other miscellaneous routine clerical tasks as needed
Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors in an office setting with public contact, working in a team environment, handling interruptions, and frequently changing tasks are common occurrences
Performing work with accuracy and attention to detail, as well as under short deadlines and with time pressures, are frequent occurrences
May be required to occasionally lift 10 pounds from floor to waist, waist to shoulder or shoulder to overhead
