About the role
Under the direction of the Assistant Director, the National Education Officer – Mental Health leads the development, coordination, and delivery of education initiatives that strengthen the union’s work on mental health supports, psychological safety, and member wellbeing.
This role provides strategic leadership in advancing mental health-related priorities emerging from conventions, resolutions, and organizational commitments. The position ensures that mental health is meaningfully integrated across the union’s education program using an intersectional, anti-racist, trauma-informed, and equity-based approach.
What we are looking for
Education & Experience:
- A combination of education, training, and experience as an adult / popular educator and program administrator.
Skills & Knowledge:
- Knowledge of the labour movement, of trade union practices and organization, and of the social, political, economic, and equity issues that are of importance to the trade union movement.
- Oral and written communications skills, including the ability to produce letters, reports, analyses, etc., within deadlines.
- Strong education development skills (e.g. ability to assess learning needs, formulate objectives, develop innovative and participatory methodology, and write facilitators’ notes and participant handouts).
- Strong facilitation and human relations skills (i.e. the ability to assess group process, to analyze individual behaviour and group dynamics, to synthesize group thoughts and opinions, to solve problems and build consensus, and to promote effective teamwork).
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of mental health and its impacts in workplace and organizing contexts.
- Good team management and conflict resolution skills.
Abilities:
- Ability to estimate costs, forecast expenditures and develop / monitor a program budget.
- Ability to operate efficiently and effectively within a political environment and must be prepared to work irregular hours and travel as required.
Personal suitability:
- High degree of initiative, tact and good judgment.
- Demonstrated commitment to union and equity principles.
What you need to know
Second language skills as per the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) will be assessed. Valid federal SLE results may be accepted.
A combination of education, experience, and demonstrated performance may substitute for formal academic requirements.
