About Redwood Materials
Redwood is localizing a global battery supply chain that seamlessly integrates recovery, reuse, and recycling — keeping critical minerals in circulation and driving the energy transition. Founded in 2017, we’re delivering low-cost and large-scale energy storage and producing battery materials in the U.S. for the first time, all from batteries we already have.
Staff Civil Engineer
Redwood Materials is seeking an experienced Staff Civil Engineer to serve as a senior individual contributor on our internal EPC Infrastructure Engineering team. In this role, you will independently deliver civil design and engineering across our battery manufacturing, recycling, and BESS infrastructure projects — managing work through all phases from planning and design through bid and construction. You will partner closely with internal multi-disciplinary teams and external consultants to produce coordinated, code-compliant designs that support Redwood's mission of building a sustainable circular economy for lithium-ion batteries and battery energy storage systems.
Responsibilities:
- Manage multiple civil engineering projects throughout planning, design, bid, and construction phases, including BMC1 sitewide infrastructure, plant projects, and off-site BESS deployments
- Independently develop high-quality civil engineering deliverables including construction documents, drawings, specifications, narratives, and calculations in conformance with IBC, ASCE 7, and local jurisdictional requirements
- Proactively communicate project needs, changes, schedule, and status to internal stakeholders and external team members
- Review drawings and proposals by vendors, engineers, and architects, and drive multi-disciplinary coordination across structural, mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and I&C
- Manage external civil engineering consultants including scope of work, deliverables, and budget, and guide consultant designs through project completion
- Perform constructability reviews, support permitting and agency coordination with Storey County and other AHJs, and resolve civil RFIs and field changes during construction
- Ensure compliance with company engineering processes, applicable codes and standards, and regulatory and safety requirements across all design deliverables
Desired Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline; advanced degree preferred
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE); Nevada licensure required or obtainable via comity within 2 months of hire
- 5+ years of hands-on experience designing and building high-tech/industrial infrastructure and operational facilities (semiconductor, solar, battery, manufacturing, etc.) or battery energy storage system deployments
- Experience in civil engineering design including stormwater management plans (flood control and water quality), SWPPPs, heavy civil, wastewater, and manufacturing/industrial operational construction
- Site development background with experience designing roadways, grading, pavements, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, domestic and fire water main systems, erosion and sediment control, and traffic plans
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and hydrology/stormwater management software
- Working knowledge of IBC, ASCE 7, and NFPA with the ability to quickly research local jurisdictional requirements
- Ability to conduct, document, and stamp engineering calculations and design packages applying established procedures and safety requirements
- Ability to manage external civil consultants through all project phases including scope, schedule, deliverables, and budget
- Ability to juggle multiple concurrent projects and competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment; travel up to 10% between Nevada plant sites
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with multi-disciplinary teams, external consultants, contractors, and AHJs
The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
