JOB SUMMARY
The Obstetrical (OB) Surgical Technician is a member of the Obstetrical healthcare team who provides technical support to the obstetrician/surgeon and registered nurse in the operating and delivery room settings. This position assists in the preparation of supplies and equipment for surgical and delivery procedures and provides the appropriate instrumentation necessary for the obstetrician/surgeon to perform these procedures. The OB Surgical Tech is responsible for maintaining current knowledge of trends in the operating room, including new products, procedures, and physicians’ techniques. Provides assistance in the maintenance of aseptic cleaning of the Operating Room pre and post procedure and maintains a par level of supplies within the department. Performs indirect and direct patient care of the neonate, and female patients under the direct supervision of a RN. Provides patient care support, maintenance of nursing unit, housekeeping and dietary tasks, and clerical support for the nursing unit.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High School Diploma or GED. Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology program
Experience
Previous Surgical Technologist experience preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.
Licensure
•
- Must be registered with the Virginia Board of Medicine as a Surgical Technologist in accordance with Virginia Code §54.1-2956.12.
- M ust hold and maintain a national surgical technologist certification (e.g., NBSTSA CST) or meet another Virginia Board-approved pathway (military training, DOL-registered apprenticeship, or applicable grandfathering criteria).
- Must provide proof of compliance prior to hire and maintain active registration throughout employment.
Additional Skills/Requirements Required
Ability to create and maintain a sterile field. Knowledge of specialized instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure materials. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Basic understanding of medical terminology. Computer skills.
