This is a one-year appointment, with the possibility of continued employment depending on the evolving needs of the School.

Bring your passion for history, social sciences, and student-centered learning to St. Mark’s as we engage students in understanding the forces, people, and places that shape our world.

Why Join Us

At St. Mark’s, the study of history and social sciences helps students understand both the complexities of the past and the challenges of an interconnected world. Through inquiry, discussion, and critical analysis, students learn to evaluate historical evidence, appreciate diverse perspectives, and engage thoughtfully with contemporary issues.

This position offers an opportunity to join a dynamic History and Social Sciences Department and work with motivated students who are eager to explore global and historical questions.

Teaching here is more than what happens in the classroom. As a faculty member, you’ll also serve as an advisor, coach, and mentor, helping students navigate school, discover new interests, and grow into their best selves. Our community thrives on collaboration and connection, and we’re looking for educators who are excited to engage fully in all aspects of residential school life.

What You’ll Do

Reporting to the Head of the History and Social Sciences Department, this teacher serves as a key member of the St. Mark’s community.

You’ll be a teacher, mentor, and co-creator of learning. You will:

  • Teach introductory through advanced levels of History to students in grades 9 through 12
  • Design engaging and developmentally appropriate learning experiences that foster critical thinking, discussion, and analytical skills
  • Create an inclusive classroom environment that supports a diverse community of learners
  • Provide meaningful feedback that encourages student growth and intellectual curiosity
  • Collaborate with department colleagues on curriculum development, course design, and innovative teaching practices
  • Serve as an advisor and mentor, supporting students academically and personally throughout their St. Mark’s experience
  • Engage fully in community life, including coaching or leading co-curricular activities during two seasons each year, participating in weekend activities and events, and more
  • Work thoughtfully with students and colleagues in ways that strengthen the inclusive and relational culture of the School

What We’re Looking For

The successful candidate will

  • Demonstrate strong content knowledge in history, human geography, and the social sciences
  • Bring enthusiasm for teaching adolescents via student-centered, active learning activities and by fostering intellectual engagement
  • Exhibit the ability to teach inclusively and connect effectively with students from diverse backgrounds and learning profiles
  • Model creativity, flexibility, and responsiveness in the classroom
  • Collaborate enthusiastically with colleagues and contribute positively to a team-oriented environment
  • Convey warmth, empathy, and high expectations when working with students
  • Demonstrate excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Show comfort using educational technology and digital tools to support teaching and learning

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in History, Geography, Education, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred
  • Secondary school teaching experience (2+ years preferred)
  • Experience teaching U.S. History, World History, Human Geography, or related courses
  • Experience working in a boarding school, residential, or student-life setting preferred

Why You’ll Love It Here

  • A warm, close-knit community of students and colleagues
  • Generous benefits: housing, meals, health coverage, tuition remission
  • Access to campus facilities, from the fitness center to nature trails
  • A chance to design, experiment, and grow professionally
  • Daily opportunities to make a difference both inside and outside the classroom

Salary Range
