The Pharmacy Technician – Medication Access supports a hybrid inpatient and ambulatory care environment, serving as a key resource in helping patients navigate medication access, insurance coverage, and affordability challenges. This highly patient-focused role involves extensive collaboration with providers, nurses, pharmacists, and care teams throughout Main Campus, with much of the day spent rounding on patient units and interacting directly with patients. Responsibilities include reviewing admissions and patient census information, verifying insurance coverage, resolving medication access barriers, managing prior authorizations, conducting medication histories, coordinating discharge medication plans, and facilitating bedside medication delivery. Working in a high-volume discharge environment, this caregiver plays a critical role in ensuring patients receive timely access to prescribed therapies while supporting continuity of care and positive clinical outcomes. Success in this role requires strong medication knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a collaborative approach to patient-centered care.
A caregiver in this position will work rotating 8-hour shifts Monday through Friday, including 8:00am to 4:30pm, 9:00am to 5:30pm, and 10:30am to 7:00pm. This role includes a rotating Saturday schedule approximately once every four weeks. During the Saturday rotation week, caregivers will be off on Wednesday, work extended shifts Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and complete a 4-hour shift on Saturday.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Provide prescription delivery service to patients in various settings, such as the hospital, Emergency Department or infusion rooms, and ensure proper payment upon delivery.
- Identify patients eligible for delivery service and review drug benefit information for patients, third parties and HMOs to promote a smooth medication procurement process that ensures reimbursement requirements are met.
- Coordinate and collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure timely and accurate procurement of prescriptions and EMR documentation.
- Identify potential medication-related access and coverage problems and work with the team and patients to solve the problems.
- Assist the manager in creating, implementing and monitoring quality control programs.
- Conduct third party prior authorization requests.
- Complete medication histories or other transitional care activities.
- Perform all job responsibilities of an inpatient of ambulatory Pharmacy Technician.
- Build positive working relationships, communicate with the team, attend and participate in team huddles and meetings, assist with training and demonstrate emotional control and intelligence.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- High School Diploma/GED
- Registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Trainee with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy.
- Eligible for registration as a Certified Pharmacy Technician with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy and register within six months of hire
- Six months of related pharmacy experience OR successful completion of a Pharmacy Technician Program
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) within 18 months of hire
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Completion of a Formal Pharmacy Technician Training Program
- Experience dealing with third-party insurance and prior authorization processes
Physical Requirements:
- Typical physical demands include ability to perform the job while standing and walking for prolonged times, approximately 75% of shift and continuously for extended periods of time.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer and dispensing functions of the job.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
- Position often includes reaching, stretching, stooping, climbing steps and sitting.
