Job Description:
The Clinical Pharmacy Technician is responsible for providing pharmacy-related care for patients with hematology and oncology conditions. All duties are completed in accordance with Piedmont Cancer Institute (PCI) policies, standards of practice, and prescribed workflows. They work with additional clinical and support staff to ensure safe, effective, quality person-centered care.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or equivalent
2. Pharmacy technician license through Georgia Board of Pharmacy
3. Certification with Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)
Summary of Duties:
1. Performs all tasks in accordance with state and federal law as well as PCI policies, standards of
practice, and prescribed workflows.
2. Demonstrates proficiency in independent order verification for chemotherapy and
immunotherapy orders.
3. Using aseptic technique, prepares intravenous medications in an accurate and timely manner.
4. Follows protocols for the safe handling of biohazardous materials, sharps, and hazardous drugs.
5. Demonstrates mathematical skills required to calculate and prepare dilutions, reconstitutions
and compounded products.
6. Accurately and efficiently uses the Electronic Inventory Control Cabinet and Software to
dispense medications and track waste and inventory.
7. Recognizes inconsistencies in medication orders, drug order reports, or deviations from practice
policies and reports these inconsistencies and deviations to the Director of Clinical Pharmacy
Operations or another member of the Senior Leadership Team.
8. Orders supplies and drugs for infusion and admixture areas by analyzing stock levels of
supplies/medications and adjusting to the needs of the practice.
9. Cleans and decontaminates primary and secondary engineering controls on a daily, weekly, and
monthly basis.
10. Checks and records temperatures on daily log compliant to USP 797 or 800 guidelines.
11. Maintains documentation for inventory control of samples and controlled substances.
12. Performs monthly inventory and inspects for expired medications.
13. Serves as a liaison to third party organizations to coordinate medication, supply, or equipment
maintenance, delivery, or return.
14. Communicates effectively with patients, care partners, members of the healthcare team, and
third-party agents or organizations.
15. Serves as a resource to colleagues and as a preceptor to new employees as directed by
pharmacy leadership.
16. Maintains a safe, clean work environment.
17. Manages time effectively and delegates responsibility as appropriate.
18. Utilizes resources in a responsible manner with a focus on cost containment.
19. Accepts personal responsibility for professional development and growth.
20. Displays willingness and flexibility to travel to other areas and locations as needs require.
21. Completes prior authorizations for oral chemotherapy and supportive care medications.
22. Respects and maintains confidential information. Demonstrates proficiency in HIPAA (Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) concepts.
23. Attends prescribed classes and trainings as required by the organization and the clinical
department.
24. Performs related work as directed by the organization’s management team.
Physical Requirements:
1. Lifting, carrying, or moving objects up to 50 pounds.
2. Frequent standing and walking.
3. Periods of prolonged sitting.
4. Close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing) and fine motor skills (IV starts,
venipuncture, injections).
5. Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
Typical Working Conditions:
1. Environmental exposures include but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure; Biohazardous
waste, Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors; Communicable diseases; Electrical shock;
Floor Surfaces; Hot/Cold Temperatures; Indoor/Outdoor conditions; Latex; Lighting; Patient
care/handling injuries.
2. Travel will be required.
3. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators.
4. Environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
HIPAA Requirements
Clinical Pharmacy Technician will have access to PHI and ePHI in the course of his/her duties. Applying the minimum necessary standard of HIPAA, this employee has access to the minimum amount of designated record sets required to perform his or her duties.
