Rail Infrastructure Field Technician (CDL-A) Location: Richmond, VA Employment Type: Direct Hire | Full-Time Starting Pay: $26.00+ per hour, based on experience Position Overview We are seeking a motivated CDL-A professional to join a specialized field operations team supporting rail infrastructure projects, emergency response activities, equipment transport, and track-related services throughout the region. This position combines commercial driving, heavy equipment operation, and hands-on field support. Team members assist with transportation logistics, maintenance activities, recovery operations, construction support, and equipment setup while maintaining the highest standards of safety and professionalism. This is a full-time direct hire opportunity offering strong earning potential, comprehensive benefits, and significant overtime opportunities.
Work Schedule & Pay
- Minimum 40 hours per week guaranteed
- Typical workload averages 60+ hours weekly with overtime
- 24/7 on-call rotation required, including weekends and holidays
- Overtime pay applies outside standard weekday hours (7:00 AM–4:00 PM)
- Additional pay includes per diem, hotel accommodations during travel, and layover compensation
What You’ll Do
- Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections following DOT requirements
- Drive tractor-trailers to transport tools, machinery, and materials to job sites
- Confirm loads are properly secured and comply with permit requirements for oversized equipment
- Take part in daily safety briefings and job planning discussions
- Load, unload, and stage equipment for track work and related operations
- Assist with rail work including rerailing, track repair, and new track installation
- Help set up and break down cranes and other heavy equipment
- Operate machinery such as excavators, backhoes, dump trucks, grapple trucks, and similar equipment (if qualified)
- Perform rigging tasks using chains, cables, and lifting gear
- Use hydraulic tools, torches, welding equipment, and standard hand tools
- Monitor equipment condition and report any mechanical issues
- Perform basic equipment maintenance and inspections
- Support cleanup, teardown, and site organization after project completion
- Restock and prepare equipment for future assignments
- Keep vehicles, tools, and work areas clean and organized
- Follow all safety guidelines and company procedures
Required Qualifications
- Valid Class A CDL with a clean driving record
- Experience in construction, labor, or similar physically demanding work
- Ability to pass required safety training and testing
- Must be available for emergency call-outs at all times
Preferred Experience
- 3+ years operating heavy equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, front-end loaders, skid steers, grapple trucks, or similar
- Background in track work, construction, or industrial environments
