Job description

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is equal parts visionary and builder. You're capable of creating a compelling artistic vision while also developing the systems, documentation, and processes necessary to bring that vision to life at scale. You have a strong visual point of view about first-person action games - what makes them feel distinctive, immersive, and genre-defining - and you know how to translate that point of view into a practical creative direction that a team can execute.

You understand how to leverage external development partners effectively, provide clear and actionable feedback, and maintain visual quality across a growing production organization. You are as comfortable in a review session with vendors as you are in a creative direction conversation with the Studio Head.

What You'll Do

  • Define, develop, and own the overall visual direction of the game from pre-production through release.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive art bibles, style guides, visual targets, and reference materials.
  • Establish artistic standards for environments, characters, props, VFX, lighting, and world-building elements.
  • Direct and provide feedback to external art vendors, ensuring assets meet quality expectations and align with the game’s creative vision.
  • Scale and manage an external art team that will grow significantly throughout production.
  • Collaborate closely with Creative Director, Game Designers, Engineering, and Production teams to ensure artistic goals support gameplay and technical requirements.
  • Review assets, concepts, and in-engine implementations to maintain visual consistency across all game content.
  • Partner with Production to develop efficient art pipelines, review processes, and asset delivery schedules.
  • Identify artistic risks early and provide solutions that balance quality, schedule, and production realities.
  • Contribute to investor and partner presentations that communicate the project’s visual vision, audience positioning, and creative roadmap - including the ability to structure and articulate the game’s IP in a way that is compelling to non-creative stakeholders.
  • Serve as the primary creative authority for visual quality and artistic execution.

Qualifications

Required

  • 8+ years of professional game development experience with significant experience in Art Direction roles.
  • Proven track record leading the visual development of one or more shipped AAA titles as Art Director or equivalent - not just contributing to but owning the creative vision from brief through final execution.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating excellence in both environmental and character art direction.
  • Experience leading large-scale art initiatives across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated success directing external development and vendor art teams.
  • Deep understanding of modern game art pipelines, production workflows, and content creation processes.
  • Strong communication and feedback skills with the ability to align diverse teams around a unified creative vision.
  • Experience working closely with Design, Engineering, and Production disciplines.
  • Experience working with Unreal Engine.
  • Experience hiring, building, or scaling an art team or external art production organization.
  • Familiarity with AI and other tools relevant to art direction and production.
  • Experience establishing an art department, visual identity, or art pipeline from scratch - without an existing team, inherited process, or established toolset to build from.

Preferred

  • Unreal Engine 5 experience is a strong advantage - familiarity with UE5-specific workflows including Lumen, Nanite, and real-time rendering systems is a meaningful plus over general Unreal experience.
  • Deep knowledge of real-time rendering technologies and modern game development tools.
  • Previous experience helping establish art departments, pipelines, or visual identities for new studios or projects.
  • Experience managing distributed or globally located external development partners.
  • Los Angeles or West Coast location

Why Join Us

  • BulletFarm is an independent, AAA studio - a creative partnership backed by GreaterThan Group, a strategic co-owner with deep gaming industry experience and a long-term ownership model aligned with the studio’s success.
  • We are remote first - work alongside a small, senior team from anywhere in the US or Canada on a project with a launch target on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Join early enough that your decisions matter - the studio is at a stage where the people building it have direct influence over how it operates, what it values, and how it makes games.
  • Competitive base salary, health, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Define the visual identity of a new AAA IP from day one - with the creative authority to shape every art discipline.
  • Build and scale a world-class internal and external art organization alongside a senior creative leadership team.
