The goal of the High School Athletic Trainer is to provide comprehensive services to local high school student athletes, including but not limited to, injury prevention, sideline game coverage and injury management, and post injury rehabilitation. The Athletic Trainer works under the supervision of the high school medical director and in close collaboration with the Burke Sports Medicine team. services to student athletes in close collaboration with the Burke Sports Medicine team, under the supervision of the school medical director.
Essential Functions
- Assist with pre-participation physical exams and athlete clearance in collaboration with team physicians and school nurse.
- Develop and implement injury prevention programs
- Evaluate and diagnose athletic injuries in collaboration with team physicians.
- Create emergency action plans for each athletic field/site, collaborate with team physicians and local EMS as appropriate
- Ensure availability of necessary emergency medical equipment
- Provide first aid and emergency care when needed at practices, games, and school athletic events
- Attend and provide services and support at practices, games, and school athletic events as appropriate
- Maintain BLS certification
- Design, implement, and oversee rehabilitation programs for injured athletes in collaboration with the medical and therapy team
- Monitor student-athlete recovery and determine readiness for return to learn and return to play as appropriate in collaboration with medical team
- Coordinate care and HIPPA compliant exchange of information between healthcare providers as appropriate
- Serve as a liaison between physicians, coaches, athletes, parents, and school staff regarding student-athlete health status, ensuring compliance with HIPPA as appropriate
- Maintain timely, accurate, and confidential records of all student-athlete injuries, treatments, and progress reports
- Maintain appropriate consent forms for physician and athletic trainer treatment of student athletes
- Maintain inventory of athletic training supplies and equipment, request replacements as needed
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and national regulations
- Develop and update standard operating procedures for student-athlete sports medicine services
- Educate student-athletes on topics such as nutrition, hydration, injury prevention, and sportsmanship
- Educate coaching staff and school administrators on injury and concussion awareness and emergency procedures
- Promote a culture of safety, health, and wellness throughout the school athletics program
- Support student health education initiatives where appropriate and as mutually agreed
- Includes evenings, weekends, and some holidays based on athletic events and seasons
- Opportunity to support Burke Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Outpatient Physician practice as needed and as mutually agreed
- Practices Standard Precautions. Follows regulations, policies and guidelines on the prevention of infections; does not eat or drink in patient care areas.
- Maintains confidentiality of information; abides by HIPAA regulations.
- Maintains a professional image and follows Hospital’s policy on uniforms; consistently wears hospital and school ID where appropriate
- Demonstrates reliable, on-time attendance, which is an essential function of all jobs at Burke.
- Completes mandatory annual learning (Learning Harbor) within deadline.
- Personally adheres to Burke C.A.R.E.S. philosophy by demonstrating compassion, accountability, respect and exceeding expectations through service excellence.

Qualifications
- Graduate of an education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training education required
- Self-motivated & directed with regard to increasing level of understanding and knowledge.
- Effective oral and written professional communication skills.
- Ability to demonstrate ethical and professional behaviors at all times.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and privacy.
- Physical and manual dexterity required as well as visual and auditory acuity.
- Frequent walking, standing and lifting.
- Will involve travel to schools within the local area.
- Board certified as an Athletic Trainer Required
- Must be flexible to accommodate high school athletic team schedule including nights and weekends
