Position Overview

This position is in the Oncology department in an ambulatory setting, with occasional cross-coverage in the infusion center. This day-shift opportunity offers the ability to build meaningful relationships with patients throughout their cancer journey while practicing alongside physicians and a highly skilled multidisciplinary team.

Under the general supervision of physician colleagues, the Nurse Practitioner provides comprehensive, evidence-based care and serves as a vital link between patients, families, and the healthcare team. The role combines direct patient care, clinical leadership, education, quality improvement, and professional development in a dynamic academic environment dedicated to delivering exceptional oncology care.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments, establish diagnoses, and develop individualized treatment plans.
  • Order, interpret, and manage diagnostic testing and prescribe therapies and medications as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, case managers, and ancillary services to ensure coordinated, high-quality care.
  • Facilitate admissions, discharges, transfers, and specialty consultations while promoting efficient patient flow.
  • Educate and counsel patients and families regarding disease processes, treatment options, symptom management, and preventive care.
  • Advocate for patients and coordinate supportive services, including pain management and palliative care resources.
  • Perform procedures and specialty consultations as appropriate to the practice.

Leadership and Quality

  • Partner with physician leadership and multidisciplinary teams to improve clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, and quality metrics.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, peer review, and development of evidence-based clinical pathways.
  • Help advance patient care delivery through research integration, best practices, and innovative models of care.
  • Serve as a resource and mentor to colleagues and contribute to departmental and organizational initiatives.

Education and Professional Development

  • Provide formal and informal education to healthcare team members and precept students.
  • Participate in grand rounds, journal clubs, and continuing education activities.
  • Engage in professional organizations and contribute to local, regional, and national educational opportunities.
  • Promote health education and outreach within the community.

Research and Academic Opportunities

  • Participate in clinical research and industry-sponsored trials.
  • Collaborate in advancing evidence-based practice and improving oncology outcomes.
  • Doctorally prepared Nurse Practitioners may have opportunities to conduct independent nursing research and contribute to the advancement of the profession.

Qualifications

  • Master of Science in Nursing and completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Current Maryland Nurse Practitioner licensure and national certification in the applicable specialty (ACNP, AGPCNP, FNP).
  • DEA and CDS eligibility.
  • BLS certification required; ACLS required for inpatient responsibilities.
  • Minimum of one year of Registered Nurse experience required.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and clinical decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professionalism, lifelong learning, and evidence-based practice.
