Job description
Are you a strategic communicator who enjoys turning complex information into clear, engaging stories that connect with communities? The City of Mission is seeking a Communications Advisor - Capital Projects to lead communications and public engagement efforts that support the City’s growing portfolio of infrastructure projects.
Reporting to the Manager of Communications & Public Engagement, you will provide strategic communications support for a variety of capital projects, including transportation, utilities, parks, facilities, and other growth-related infrastructure initiatives. Working alongside project teams from concept through construction and completion, you will help ensure residents, businesses, stakeholders, and community groups are informed, engaged, and connected every step of the way.
In this role, you will develop and implement communications strategies, campaigns, and engagement plans for capital projects throughout their lifecycle. You will create a wide range of content including key messages, FAQs, construction notices, website and social media updates, presentations, media materials, videos, and community updates. You will also coordinate public engagement activities such as open houses, information sessions, pop-up events, online engagement opportunities, and stakeholder briefings, while preparing summaries that capture community feedback and project outcomes.
As a trusted communications advisor, you will work closely with engineering, planning, operations, leadership, and project management teams to translate technical information into clear, accessible language for diverse audiences. You will prepare briefing materials, speaking notes, and presentations to support Council and senior leadership communications, respond to media inquiries, and help communicate project impacts, timelines, disruptions, and long-term community benefits.
The successful candidate will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong relationship-building abilities, and experience developing strategic communications and public engagement initiatives. You are comfortable collaborating across departments, managing multiple priorities, and creating meaningful opportunities for public participation.
Qualifications include a bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Political Science, Public Administration, or a related field, along with a minimum of five years of progressively responsible communications experience, preferably in a municipal or public sector environment. Experience supporting infrastructure or capital projects and creating engaging multimedia content, including short videos, is preferred. Established media relationships would be considered an asset.
The successful candidate will possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence and have access to a vehicle.
The 2025 hourly rate for this full-time CUPE position is $49.37, plus a comprehensive benefits package including the Municipal Pension Plan. We also offer a 9-day fortnight schedule (extended hours for nine days and one day off every two weeks). As this is a newly created position, the job description, classification, and wage rate are under review with the union and may be subject to change.
Join the City of Mission and help shape how our community experiences the projects that support its future growth and success.
