Position Overview

Follows clearly defined nutritional procedures to provide support to Clinical Dieticians, physicians and other health care providers with implementation and monitoring of medical nutrition therapy (MNT), including nutrition education, assessment and treatment. Collects patient data and information to understand patients' needs and create menus that support their plan of care. Exercises sound judgment, and developed clinical skills to guide individuals, families, or caregivers in food selection, preparation, or menu planning, based upon nutritional needs and established guidelines. Gains confidence and cooperation from the patient, their family/support group, and other healthcare providers through competent patient assessment, attentive monitoring and care, and effective communication. Adheres to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies and procedures to ensure privacy and safety while delivering optimal patient care.

Job Description

NUTRITIONAL SERVICES.

  • Conduct nutritional assessments of individuals, including obtaining and evaluating individuals' dietary histories, allergies, and physician notes.
  • Interprets data to formulate a comprehensive nutrition assessment to create special meals or diets and assist dietitians or nutritionists in food service planning.
  • Observe patient food intake and report progress and dietary problems to dieticians.
  • Ensures that routine and priority tasks are completed within established departmental time frames.

CLERICAL.

  • May perform clerical tasks such as retrieving, entering and revising patient electronic health records.
  • Prepares and completes accurate documentation related to patient, including all food intake and response to diet in medical and departmental records.

SAFETY.

  • Maintains a clean, neat, and safe working environment, including cleaning and disinfecting equipment after each use.

COMPLIANCE.

  • Maintains strictest confidence of all patient protected health information (PHI) and protects all PHI from accidental, intentional, or inappropriate disclosure.
  • Performs care in compliance with department standards, policies, and procedures, as well as local, state and federal regulatory agencies to deliver the highest level of patient privacy and care.
  • Retains certification and completes mandated continuing education requirements to meet facility and regulatory agencies accreditation and licensure requirements

EDUCATION: Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.

Associate's: Associate’s degree in Dietetics, Nutrition or related field from an accredited program or equivalent education/experience

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE

1 year recent relevant experience.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of various nutritional diets, principles, procedures, views, and equipment used in the treatment of patients with varying disorders.

Capable of performing routine nutritional therapy as well as a basic understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology.

Possess written and verbal communications skills to explain sensitive information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences, including non-medical people.

Well-developed time management and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize assignments and work within standardized operating procedures and scientific methods to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.

General knowledge of computer applications, such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook), electronic health records (EHR).

Interpret a variety of data and instructions, furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Prioritize assignments and work within standardized policies, procedures, and scientific methods to achieve objectives and meet deadlines.

Work independently, as well as be part of the team, including accomplishing multiple tasks in an environment with interruptions.

Identify, evaluate and resolve standard problems by selecting appropriate solutions from established options.

Ensure the privacy of each patient’s protected health information (PHI).

Build collaborative relationships with peers and other healthcare providers to achieve departmental and corporate objectives.

Analyze patient data to determine patient nutritional needs.

The compensation range may vary based on the geographic location where the position is filled. Total compensation considers multiple factors, including, but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure, certifications, departmental equity, training, and organizational needs.
