CUNY has embarked on a multi-billion-dollar, multi-year capital design and construction program across its 26 campuses. The Design and Construction Management Interns are key members of the project management team in the Office of Facilities Planning, Construction, and Management (FPCM), playing a vital role in the successful implementation of this program. They are actively engaged in supporting the management of projects ranging from less than $1M to over $50M, targeting all elements of the 26 Colleges that make up the City University of New York system. The Interns support Project Managers and Assistant Directors in implementing capital-funded construction projects including the design and construction of new buildings, renovation projects, infrastructure projects, energy performance and decarbonization projects, repair projects, and capital maintenance projects at CUNY campuses.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Project Manager and/or Assistant Directors:
Become familiar with CUNY’s planning, design, and construction processes, as outlined in CUNY’s Project Management and Consultant Guidelines. This captures projects from initial inception, designer procurement, design, construction manager procurement, contractor bidding and selection, and construction through final closeout
Learn to use, enter, maintain, and access information in CUNY’s PMWeb-based project management system. A necessary element in modern construction project design and execution, our interns use a commercial web-based project management system
Participate in design and construction meetings, develop and/or review meeting minutes, action items, and progress to ensure that projects stay on schedule and under budget
Apply CUNY’s project management procedures and standards using appropriate methods and technologies
Communicate effectively with all project participants, including end users, designers, construction managers and contractors, as applicable
Support the PM and AD to ensure they meet standards for performance (time, cost, quality)
Perform work indoors and outdoors under various environmental conditions, including extreme temperature conditions, climbing ladders and scaffolds, and working in close spaces as necessary to advance project(s). Work may require driving to work locations
Conduct project estimation and establish project budget
Document project requirements and assist in preparing project design specifications, Requests for Proposal (RFPs) or other consultant procurement solicitations
During the course of a construction project, analyze and document change orders
May function as an Expeditor, completing required documentation to obtain appropriate licenses and certificates, assisting in dealings with the NYC Department of Buildings and other authorities
Inspect ongoing projects, collecting data on project status for review by management
Collect and transmit data on project progress, utilizing appropriate technology
Collect and maintain information on vendor activities, including time spent, tasks performed, and billing information
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications and Core Competencies:
Enrolled in a CUNY school with at least 48 credits towards a Bachelor’s degree
Junior or Senior in good standing within CCNY’s Grove School of Engineering or Spitzer School of Architecture or NYCCT’s Architecture, Construction Management Technology, Facilities Management, or Mechanical Engineering Technology undergraduate degree program
Strong technical and analytical skills
Computer skills, including email, spreadsheets, databases, project management, and presentation packages
Excellent written and verbal communication

Pay Range:
Minimum - Maximum: $17.50/hr
