Emergency Department Physician

Job Summary

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Denver Health, in partnership with the Denver Health Paramedic Division, is recruiting a full-time academic Emergency Medicine physician with a focus on EMS operations.

This position offers the opportunity to practice within one of the nation's most established and integrated EMS systems. The successful candidate will join a highly collaborative EMS leadership team consisting of the Paramedic Division Medical Director/Associate Chair of EMS and five divisional faculty, all board-certified in EMS. Together, this team provides medical direction for more than 265 Denver Paramedics and EMTs, Denver Paramedics Dispatch, and the Denver Health Paramedic School.

The faculty member will report directly to the Associate Chair of EMS and will play an active role in EMS system oversight, quality improvement, clinical operations, education, and scholarly activity. As a faculty member in the sponsoring institution for the Denver Health Residency in Emergency Medicine, the position includes substantial opportunities to teach residents, EMS fellows, paramedics, and medical students while building an academic career. Denver Health has a long-standing ACGME-accredited EMS Fellowship that is deeply integrated into the work of the EMS Division. Faculty work closely with fellows on operational projects, education, and scholarship and play an important role in training the next generation of EMS leaders. Faculty appointments are through the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and all faculty are expected to contribute to the missions of clinical care, education, scholarship, and service.

The Denver Health Paramedic Division provides 911 Advanced Life Support (ALS) services and ambulance transportation to the City and County of Denver, Denver International Airport, the cities of Glendale, Sheridan, and Englewood, and portions of unincorporated Arapahoe County. The division includes 269 field paramedics and EMTs, 41 command staff, and more than 100 additional employees supporting communications, education, fleet operations, and administration. The system responds to more than 140,000 EMS calls annually.

The Department of Emergency Medicine cares for more than 120,000 patient visits annually across a 57-bed adult emergency department, a 19-bed pediatric emergency department and urgent care, and a 23-bed Clinical Decision Unit. Denver Health is home to the Ernest E. Moore Shock Trauma Center, a Level I Adult and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center serving the Rocky Mountain region. The department provides a high-acuity clinical environment with a 25% admission rate and is staffed by emergency physicians, residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, nurses, and a highly collaborative multidisciplinary care team.

Denver Health is a nationally recognized integrated health care system and serves as Denver's primary safety-net institution. The system includes a large acute-care hospital, a network of community health centers, the Public Health Institute at Denver Health, Denver Paramedics, and the Rocky Mountain Poison and Drug Safety Center. Denver Health has provided more than $3.3 billion in uncompensated care over the past decade and is nationally recognized for its commitment to quality improvement, operational excellence, and innovation in healthcare delivery.

Denver Health and the Department of Emergency Medicine are committed to building and sustaining a diverse workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We believe excellence in patient care, education, and scholarship is strengthened by different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. We seek faculty who share our commitment to creating an environment where patients, learners, and colleagues are treated with respect, dignity, and compassion.
