Job description
Galveston County Health District is seeking a dedicated and analytical Epidemiologist II to support disease surveillance, outbreak investigations, and public health preparedness efforts throughout Galveston County and other jurisdictions as requested by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). In this role, you will investigate reportable diseases and conditions, analyze data, coordinate with healthcare partners, and help protect the health of our community through timely public health response activities.

What You'll Do
- Investigate reportable diseases and conditions in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines
- Conduct surveillance activities and support outbreak investigations
- Collect, analyze, and maintain epidemiologic data and disease registries
- Prepare reports and communicate findings to the Epidemiology Manager and Local Health Authority
- Review medical records, laboratory reports, and other health information to establish case definitions
- Coordinate disease prevention and control activities with healthcare providers and community partners
- Participate in the 24/7 on-call rotation for public health emergencies
- Support public health preparedness planning and response efforts
- Prepare monthly and special reports, including respiratory surveillance and morbidity reports
- Serve as a liaison to healthcare providers, school nurses, laboratories, and other stakeholders
- Provide presentations and education to public health professionals and the community
- Mentor students and support special surveillance projects
- Respond to public health emergencies and disaster-related activities as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
What We're Looking For
- Master's degree in Public Health, Natural Sciences, or a related field
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience investigating and tracking reportable health conditions
- Previous experience as a public health epidemiologist in a governmental setting preferred
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
- Ability to establish effective relationships with healthcare providers, community partners, and diverse populations
- Must maintain 24/7 accessibility for emergencies unless prior arrangements are made with the supervisor
- Must possess reliable transportation and have a satisfactory driving record
- Willingness to work evenings, weekends, overtime, and periodic overnight travel as needed during outbreaks or emergencies
- Must meet immunization, background check, and drug/alcohol screening requirements
