Description of role:

TWI are seeking to appoint an experienced General Manager to lead a newly established Inspection Qualification Services business unit based in TWI Middlesbrough, UK.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a small, specialised team delivering independent and impartial qualification of non-destructive testing (NDT) procedures, personnel and equipment in critical safety sectors, including nuclear and defence. All activities will be delivered in accordance with ISO 17020 requirements.

This is a leadership role focused on establishing and growing the business unit, ensuring technical credibility, maintaining compliance and developing a strong pipeline of work. The role requires a combination of management capability, NDT technical knowledge and experience operating within highly regulated industries.

To be successful, you will be able to: 

  • Provide leadership and direction to a small, specialist technical team delivering inspection qualification activities.
  • Ensure all work is conducted impartially and independently, in line with ISO 17020 requirements.
  • Balance technical understanding with effective business and operational management.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, regulators and internal stakeholders.
  • Develop and grow the business through engagement with industry and identification of new opportunities.
  • Operate effectively in a fast paced environment with competing priorities

Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead and manage the inspection qualification services business unit, ensuring delivery of safe, high-quality and compliant services.
  • Ensure all activities are conducted in accordance with ISO 17020, maintaining independence, impartiality, and technical integrity.
  • Manage and develop technical staff in line with TWI values and organisational requirements.
  • Work with TWI QHSE to establish, implement and maintain the management system and support accreditation activities.
  • Maintain ISO 17020 accreditation, including engagement with auditors and timely resolution of non-conformances.
  • Review incoming work to ensure capability and capacity to meet customer requirements.
  • Monitor delivery to ensure work is conducted safely, effectively and to the required quality standards.
  • Ensure facilities, equipment and working environments are suitable for qualification activities.
  • Proactively develop a pipeline of new business, engaging with potential customers, colleagues in other business units and the business development function.
  • Remain flexible to the needs of the business, supporting the team to deliver work in times of high demand.

Travel:

This position will require travel on a short-term basis within the UK and overseas according to the demand of client interactions.  This role can be offered as a hybrid role with three days working in the office/customer sites and the remainder working at home.
