Job description

Earth Sciences NZ was established on 1 July 2025 through the merger of GNS and NIWA, with the upcoming acquisition of MetService further strengthening its capabilities. Bringing together multidisciplinary expertise and advanced technology, it will excel in earth, environmental, and natural resources science across six core missions: Geological Hazards, Weather and Climate, Energy, Land and Freshwater, Atmosphere and Climate, and Oceans.

This new entity forms part of the most significant reform to New Zealand’s science and innovation system in more than three decades, designed to create a more dynamic, collaborative, and impactful science system. Following the acquisition of MetService, Earth Sciences NZ will comprise around 1,500 staff across 22 sites, with assets of approximately $400 million and annual revenues of $370 million, including substantial commercial streams. This provides a unique opportunity to shape the future of science delivery for Aotearoa New Zealand and position the organisation as a globally recognised leader in its field. The Role

We are seeking a Geomatics Surveyor to support our work focused on landslide hazards and associated risks, and responding to natural hazard events including landslides, earthquakes, and severe weather events. This role involves undertaking fieldwork across urban and remote locations throughout New Zealand and may include marine surveying work and international travel. You will bring a strong background in surveying or geomatics, with the capability to manage the full spatial data lifecycle—from data capture and processing through to analysis and application. An interest in earth sciences and geohazards will be highly beneficial in this role.

What You’ll Do

  • Apply geomatics expertise to analyse ground deformation using advanced spatial technologies.
  • Capture, process, integrate, and interpret geospatial data from field and remote sensing sources.
  • Deliver high-quality insights for research and commercial projects
  • Support operations through equipment upkeep, team training, and landslide response work.

What you’ll bring

  • Relevant qualification in geomatics, surveying, or a related field (postgraduate study advantageous) with proven industry or research experience.
  • Strong expertise in GNSS, geospatial analysis, and a range of surveying and remote sensing technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver field surveys, with willingness to travel for extended fieldwork.
  • Strong skills in data management, processing, analysis, and technical reporting
  • Effective communicator and adaptable team player with strong organisation and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience in offshore marine surveying would be advantageous.

What we offer

  • Varied, challenging and important work with talented colleagues in an organisation devoted to earth science.
  • A high performing organisation with a focus on employee development and wellbeing
  • Generous leave entitlements and employee benefits
  • A permanent, full time (38 hours per week) role based at our campus in Avalon, Lower Hutt.
  • The salary range for this position is between $84,334 to $111,081, depending on the successful candidate’s experience.
