Job Summary
Avangrid relies on accurate, high‑resolution forecasting to optimize the economic and operational performance of its wind and solar generation fleet. The Senior Meteorologist & AI Forecasting Systems Lead plays a critical role in both operational forecasting and the digital transformation of Avangrid’s meteorological and power‑forecasting capabilities.
This position combines advanced numerical weather prediction (NWP), meteorological analysis, and renewable‑energy forecasting expertise with leadership in AI‑enabled forecasting technologies, automated modeling workflows, and system modernization. The role supports daily forecasting operations while driving the transition from manual forecast enhancement to scalable, AI‑driven forecasting frameworks.
The ideal candidate brings deep atmospheric science knowledge, strong programming and data‑engineering skills, and experience integrating advanced forecasting tools into commercial and operational environments. This position also supports operational forecasting shifts as needed.
Key Responsibilities
AI‑Enabled Forecasting & Digital Transformation
Lead the transition from manual forecast‑enhancement processes to automated, AI‑enabled forecasting workflows across daily, hourly, and sub‑hourly horizons.
Design and implement forecasting frameworks that leverage machine‑learning‑augmented NWP, ensemble modeling, and advanced post‑processing techniques.
Evaluate, onboard, and operationalize AI‑enabled forecasting vendors, tools, and technologies.
Develop and maintain forecast‑performance metrics, validation routines, and continuous‑improvement processes.
Ensure forecasting outputs meet the needs of trading, real‑time operations, asset management, and market‑compliance functions.
Forecasting, Modeling & Meteorological Analysis
Serve as an NWP specialist and atmospheric data analyst, maintaining and enhancing forecasting tools, meteorological products, databases, and modeling workflows.
Integrate and interpret meteorological data from internal models, third‑party forecast providers, AI‑enhanced systems, and public sources to produce accurate wind and solar generation forecasts.
Perform meteorological analysis, model evaluation, and post‑processing to improve forecast skill and operational accuracy.
Communicate forecasts, uncertainty, and risk clearly and within strict operational deadlines.
Provide forecasting and analytical support for wind and solar facility operations, maintenance planning, and construction activities.
Participate in rotating on‑site forecasting shifts, including holidays and weekends.
Systems, Data Infrastructure & Cross‑Functional Collaboration
Maintain and enhance the technical infrastructure supporting NWP ingestion, post‑processing, verification, and high‑resolution modeling.
Collaborate with IT, Data & Analytics, and Market Operations to define data pipelines, system requirements, and governance standards for AI‑enabled forecasting.
Support production deployment, system resilience, and operational readiness of forecasting tools, including servers, databases, dataflows, and computational clusters.
Ensure high‑quality use of meteorological, SCADA, and asset‑performance data in forecasting applications.
Operational Enablement, Training & Change Management
Support the evolution of Trading Meteorology toward model oversight, performance monitoring, and exception‑based human intervention.
Develop documentation, training materials, and operational handoffs to ensure durable adoption of new forecasting technologies.
Mentor and train new meteorologists in NWP systems, modeling tools, AI‑enhanced forecasting methodologies, and operational processes.
Adhere to internal controls, documentation standards, and compliance requirements.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related technical discipline.
Minimum of 3 years of operational forecasting experience, including work with meteorological computational modeling applications and numerical weather prediction.
Strong working knowledge of numerical weather prediction (NWP), renewable power forecasting, and forecast verification techniques.
Experience supporting wind and/or solar generation assets in operational or commercial contexts.
Proficiency in programming and data‑analysis tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB, shell scripting, PERL, Ruby, JavaScript, PHP, Visual Basic).
Strong Linux proficiency, including system administration, troubleshooting, and software installation.
Experience with AVEVA PI, SEEQ, Tableau, and relational databases.
Ability to work cross‑functionally with trading, operations, vendors, and technical teams.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree or PhD in Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related technical discipline.
Direct experience deploying or operationalizing AI or machine‑learning‑based forecasting solutions.
Familiarity with cloud‑based analytics environments, automated modeling workflows, or MLOps principles.
Experience supporting ISO/RTO market participation and real‑time trading environments.
