Summary

St. Margaret’s School (SMS) is Western Canada’s only girl-centered, independent day and boarding school located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on the unceded traditional territories of the Esquimalt Nations, Songhees Nations, and W̱SÁNEĆ Nations. Founded in 1908, SMS is an international centre for girl-centered learning and leadership development, providing empowering education for girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (boarding grades 7–12). St. Margaret’s School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) School offering the Diploma Programme, and we are a candidate school for the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).

The Kindergarten Teacher and Early Years Pedagogical Coordinator is a combined position responsible for both classroom instruction and pedagogical coordination within the Junior School. The role provides educational leadership, program oversight, and operational support to ensure the delivery of a safe, developmentally appropriate, and high-quality early learning environment. In the Kindergarten Teacher component of the role, the incumbent is accountable for planning, delivering, and assessing developmentally appropriate, play-based, and inquiry-driven learning experiences that support foundational academic, social-emotional, physical, and cognitive development. The position requires the application of sound instructional practice, classroom management, and effective communication with parents and caregivers.

In the Early Years Pedagogical Coordinator component of the role, the incumbent is accountable for the day-to-day coordination of the Junior Kindergarten program, including regulatory compliance, pedagogical alignment, documentation practices, staffing support, and program continuity. The role ensures that program delivery is aligned with the school’s educational philosophy, operational requirements, and applicable licensing standards.

This position contributes to the quality and consistency of the early years program through pedagogical leadership, support for curriculum implementation, and the establishment of a learning environment that promotes student well-being, engagement, and developmental progress. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining accurate student and program documentation, supporting communication with parents, and providing guidance, supervision, and mentorship to early years educators. The role requires a strong working knowledge of the BC Early Learning Framework, inquiry-based learning, and play-based pedagogy.

Reporting to the Vice-Principal, Primary Years Program, the position works in collaboration with school leadership, educators, and support services to support effective program delivery and student success. The incumbent is also expected to participate in meetings, professional learning, and school-based activities as part of the broader responsibilities of the role.

Duties and Responsibilities

Kindergarten Teacher

  • Plans, delivers, and assesses developmentally appropriate instruction in literacy, numeracy, and other Kindergarten curricular areas.
  • Establishes and maintains a safe, welcoming, and structured classroom environment that supports learning, curiosity, and school readiness.
  • Implements play-based and inquiry-based instructional approaches to support foundational academic and social-emotional development.
  • Monitors student progress through ongoing observation and assessment and uses this information to inform instructional planning.
  • Responds to the individual learning, behavioural, and developmental needs of students through appropriate classroom practices and supports.
  • Promotes positive behaviour, social skills, and emotional regulation within the classroom and school environment.
  • Collaborates with colleagues and student support personnel to implement accommodations and support diverse learning needs.
  • Maintains regular communication with parents regarding student progress, classroom activities, and school-related matters.
  • Participates in professional learning, co-curricular activities, and other duties associated with the teaching role.
  • Works collaboratively with school leadership and colleagues to support program implementation and student achievement.

Early Years Pedagogical Coordinator

  • Coordinates the daily operation of the Junior Kindergarten program and supports the delivery of a high-quality early learning environment.
  • Implements and monitors policies, procedures, and practices in accordance with applicable licensing, regulatory, and school requirements.
  • Maintains accurate and complete program documentation, including developmental observations, attendance records, and student information.
  • Ensures compliance with health, safety, and licensing standards and maintains readiness for inspections or audits.
  • Provides day-to-day leadership, supervision, and support to Early Childhood Educators, Early Childhood Education Assistants, and Responsible Adults.
  • Prepares schedules, assigns responsibilities, and coordinates staffing resources in alignment with program needs and approved budget parameters.
  • Collaborates with school leadership and internal departments to support student transitions, enrolment processes, and family engagement.
  • Supports program promotion, prospective family engagement, and student intake processes, including participation in open houses as required.
  • Contributes to program planning, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Provides pedagogical guidance, coaching, and mentorship to educators in curriculum planning, inquiry-based learning, and early years practice.
  • Facilitates collaboration among educators and supports professional learning opportunities for staff and parents.
  • Participates in meetings, performance review processes, school events, and other duties associated with the coordination function.

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Early Childhood Education, or a related discipline.
  • Current BC Early Childhood Educator certification (license to practice).
  • BC Teacher Qualification Certificate is preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of related experience in a supervisory early childhood education setting and in a full-time Kindergarten teaching role.
  • Valid First Aid certification.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
