Yard Employee – Continental Days

Position Summary

The Yard Employee is responsible for maintaining the facility’s outdoor operations in compliance with Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) requirements and fire prevention standards. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the yard remains organized, clean, safe, and operationally efficient through housekeeping activities, tire management, and equipment operation.

Key Responsibilities

Environmental & Fire Compliance

  • Maintain tire storage areas in accordance with ECA requirements and site operating procedures.
  • Monitor tire pile sizes, spacing, and overall yard organization.
  • Ensure fire lanes, emergency access routes, and designated safety zones remain clear at all times.
  • Assist with inspections and corrective actions related to environmental and fire prevention requirements.
  • Report compliance concerns, hazards, or unsafe conditions to management.

Yard Maintenance & Housekeeping

  • Sweep roadways, processing areas, fire lanes, and storage areas to maintain a clean and safe facility.
  • Collect and properly dispose of loose tire wire and other debris.
  • Maintain general housekeeping throughout the yard.
  • Support site appearance and cleanliness standards.

Tire Processing Support

  • Operate an excavator equipped with a shear attachment to cut oversized tires into acceptable sizes for shredding operations.
  • Inspect tires and segregate oversized or non-conforming material as required.
  • Ensure a consistent supply of properly prepared material for processing operations.
  • Follow all operating procedures while handling and processing materials.
  • Follow all company health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Report hazards, incidents, and near misses immediately.
  • Participate in safety meetings and training programs.

Additional Operational Support

  • Provide support to scalehouse operations as required.
  • Assist with shipping and receiving activities, including trailer movements and load coordination.
  • Support other departments during operational needs, vacations, absences, or peak workload periods.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • Experience operating excavators or similar heavy equipment preferred.
  • Experience working in an industrial, recycling, waste management, manufacturing, or logistics environment is considered an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Strong understanding of safe work practices around heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
