Safety Manager
Salary
Job description
About the Role
UMX is seeking a Safety Manager who views safety not as a compliance checkbox, but as the operational foundation that makes everything else possible.
You will be responsible for building, maintaining, and continuously improving our safety management systems across marine construction and commercial dive operations — including work performed at federal installations.
This role requires someone who can review a project plan and immediately identify the hazards that haven’t been addressed yet. You will partner with field supervisors, project managers, and executive leadership to embed a culture of proactive risk management throughout the organization.
This is not a clipboard-only safety role.
We are looking for a leader who is highly observant, operationally engaged, and confident enough to challenge assumptions before work begins. Someone who earns respect in the field through competence, preparation, and consistency — not just authority.
If you are the type of person who naturally notices what others miss, enjoys solving operational problems before they become incidents, and takes pride in building systems that protect people while improving execution, you will thrive here.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive safety programs, policies, and procedures across all UMX operations
- Conduct project-specific hazard analyses, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs) for complex marine and diving scopes
- Lead pre-task safety planning and toolbox talks while verifying field implementation
- Perform regular site audits and inspections; document findings and drive corrective actions to closure
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions; conduct root cause analysis and implement systemic corrective measures
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, USCG, Navy, EM385-1-1, and other applicable regulatory requirements
- Maintain OSHA logs, incident reports, and required safety records
- Develop and deliver safety training programs tailored to marine construction and commercial diving operations
- Track leading and lagging safety indicators; report performance to leadership and clients
- Collaborate with Project Managers during preconstruction planning to identify and mitigate operational hazards before mobilization
- Support business development efforts through safety reviews, client submittals, and pre-bid planning
Qualifications
- Minimum 7 years of safety management experience in construction, industrial, marine, or related environments
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification required
- OSHA 500 Trainer certification preferred
- Strong working knowledge of EM385-1-1
- Experience with commercial diving safety regulations (29 CFR 1910.410 or equivalent) highly advantageous
- Demonstrated ability to influence field behavior and strengthen safety culture through leadership and credibility
- Strong written communication and documentation skills
- Experience supporting federal or government construction contracts preferred
- CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CHST certification preferred
Leadership & Personality Traits We Value
- Calm under pressure and capable of making sound decisions in dynamic field environments
- Naturally proactive rather than reactive
- High attention to detail with strong situational awareness
- Comfortable having difficult conversations when safety or operational standards are at risk
- Respected by crews because you lead through consistency, fairness, and competence
- Able to balance accountability with professionalism and trust
- Strong sense of ownership and personal responsibility
- Operationally minded — understands how safety integrates with production, logistics, scheduling, and execution
- Confident enough to challenge unsafe plans regardless of title or position
- Continuous improvement mindset with a desire to build better systems, not just maintain them
The Challenge
UMX performs demanding marine construction and commercial dive work in environments where planning, discipline, and leadership matter.
You will be expected to
- Walk active projects and identify risks before crews are exposed
- Influence experienced field personnel and operational leaders
- Build systems that hold up under real-world conditions, not just during audits
- Support federal projects where safety expectations are exceptionally high
- Help shape the long-term safety culture of a growing marine construction company
This role is best suited for someone who takes pride in high standards, enjoys solving operational challenges, and wants a seat at the table when important project decisions are being made.
What Sets You Apart
You don’t just respond to hazards, you eliminate them before work begins.
You walk sites with a critical eye, ask the hard questions others overlook, and build trust with field crews through expertise and consistency. You understand that the strongest safety programs are built on systems, planning, accountability, and culture, not fear.
Join UMX
At UMX, safety is operational excellence. We are looking for a leader who can help drive that standard across every project, every crew, and every dive operation.
