Legal Counsel
Penn-co Construction, a leading construction company is actively seeking a skilled Legal Counsel to enhance our team. Working location is flexible at either our Steinbach or Winnipeg office. As Legal Counsel, you will be integral in reviewing and managing contracts, assessing legal risks, and overseeing the Company’s insurance portfolio. Your role will include working on construction contracts, coordinating dispute resolution for project specific claims, and liaising with project managers and external legal counsel. Responsibilities
- Lead, structure, draft, review, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
- Provide proactive guidance on legal and contractual risks to project and bid teams.
- Provide timely legal advice regarding all legal issues affecting the company, including compliance with federal, provincial, and local laws and all contractual obligations.
- Conduct legal research to monito legal developments and changes to legislation.
- Provide legal advice and guidance on corporate, employment, and labour relation matters.
- Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies to minimize or avoid contractual disputes.
- Manage and coordinate insurance policy renewals, project specific insurance, and claims.
- Advise on dispute resolution strategies including negotiation, litigation, adjudication, arbitration and construction liens and collaborate with external legal counsel as required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Law or Juris Doctor degree and be in good standing with the Law Society of Manitoba.
- Minimum of one year of legal experience, either practicing as a lawyer in a law firm or serving in a legal role within a corporate setting.
- Familiarity with The Builders’ Lien Act (Manitoba) including Prompt Payment, Ontario Construction Act, Canadian Construction Association contract documents, and other construction contracts is an asset.
- Experience in alternative dispute resolution and legal negotiations.
- Strong negotiation, research, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient in coordinating with multiple stakeholders.
