Underwriting Technician - Job Description

Position Summary

Avoca Risk is seeking an Underwriting Technician to support its growing specialty underwriting platform. This role is responsible for ensuring underwriting quality, operational integrity, and a seamless broker experience through detailed file review, process ownership, and cross-functional coordination. The position plays a hands-on, operational role focused on underwriting execution, workflow adherence, and continuous process improvement, directly supporting business growth and scalable program development.

Key Responsibilities

Functional Leadership & Ownership

· Ownership of underwriting support processes including file quality, documentation standards, and workflow adherence.

· Acts as a key liaison between underwriting, operations, and external partners to ensure alignment and efficiency.

Hands-On Execution & Delivery

· Conduct account-level and policy-level reviews for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.

· Manage subjectivities and ensure timely resolution prior to binding and issuance.

· Maintain underwriting documentation and system data while directly supporting account progression.

Reporting, Quality & Operational Support

· Perform internal audits, maintain data accuracy, track account status, and support reporting and analytics initiatives.

· Ensure quality assurance across underwriting files and proactively resolve data or process issues.

Cross-Functional Partnership & Integration

· Communicate with brokers to obtain missing information and support account movement.

· Partner across underwriting, operations, and leadership to ensure seamless handoffs and alignment of underwriting workflows.

Growth, Change & Special Initiatives

· Support underwriting leadership with ad hoc projects, portfolio reviews, and account targeting.

· Contribute to scaling program operations and supporting growth initiatives.

Process Improvement & Best Practices

· Identify opportunities to improve underwriting workflows, controls, and documentation.

· Assist with testing and QA of underwriting systems and tools. Promote continuous improvement and scalable best practices.

Accountability

The role is accountable for delivering high-quality, accurate underwriting support, maintaining data integrity, ensuring workflow compliance, supporting operational scalability, and fostering strong collaboration across teams and external partners.

Qualifications

Required

· 3-8 years of underwriting support experience at an insurance carrier or MGA.

· Strong knowledge of underwriting workflows, policy documentation, and QA processes.

· High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

· Ability to manage multiple accounts and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

· Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred

· Experience supporting specialty lines such as Cyber, Professional Liability, or E&O.

· Experience in a program or delegated authority environment.

· Experience with underwriting systems, rating tools, and reporting.

· Professional insurance designations such as CPCU or AINS.
