Staff Accountant - Job Description

Position Summary

The Staff Accountant supports a specialized insurance/financial services business by owning day-to-day accounting operations, fiduciary banking activity, and underwriting financial support. This role is highly hands-on and responsible for ensuring accurate financial execution, including premium and claims accounting, reconciliations, and reporting. The position partners closely with underwriting and operational teams, contributes to financial integrity and control, and plays a key role in supporting growth, audits, and ongoing operations.

Key Responsibilities

Functional Leadership & Ownership

· Own fiduciary banking operations across multiple accounts, including reconciliation, reporting, and fund movement.

· Serve as subject-matter resource for premium and claims accounting processes.

· Ensure proper financial setup for policies, renewals, and treaties.

· Maintain accountability for accuracy and integrity of financial data and transactions.

Hands-On Execution & Delivery

· Record daily financial activity and perform account reconciliations.

· Process premiums, deposits, payments, and disbursements (ACH, EFT, wires).

· Execute claims payment cycles and maintain supporting documentation.

· Prepare journal entries and support general accounting functions (AR/AP).

Reporting, Quality & Operational Support

· Prepare and distribute month-end and carrier reporting packages.

· Reconcile bordereaux and ensure accuracy of financial outputs.

· Monitor discrepancies and resolve financial issues proactively.

· Support audit requests and ensure compliance with financial controls.

Cross-Functional Partnership & Integration

· Partner with underwriting teams to resolve financial discrepancies.

· Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders including brokers and carriers.

· Ensure financial data supports downstream reporting and operations.

Growth, Change & Special Initiatives

· Assist with system enhancements and troubleshooting.

· Support business growth by maintaining scalable financial processes.

· Contribute to process documentation and improvements.

Process Improvement & Best Practices

· Identify opportunities to streamline accounting and reconciliation processes.

· Enhance efficiency and accuracy through improved workflows.

· Stay current with insurance accounting practices and tools.

Accountability

· Deliver accurate and timely financial reporting and reconciliations.

· Maintain strong financial controls and data integrity.

· Support seamless accounting operations during growth and change.

· Build collaborative relationships across teams.

· Demonstrate ownership, prioritization, and sound decision-making.

Qualifications

Required

· Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent experience.

· 3-5+ years of insurance or financial services accounting experience.

· Strong analytical, reconciliation, and problem-solving skills.

· Hands-on experience with AR/AP, cash applications, and payments.

· Ability to work independently and manage priorities.

Preferred

· Knowledge of insurance terminology and operations.

· Experience with accounting systems and Excel (pivot tables).

· Exposure to audits, 1099 reporting, and financial compliance.
