Job description

About the role

Help keep Dorset's essential services running.

We're looking for a skilled and proactive Repairs & Maintenance Surveyor to help us maintain safe, compliant and reliable buildings across Dorset's Operational property portfolio.

About the role

As an Operational Assets Repairs & Maintenance Surveyor, you'll take ownership of a defined portfolio of operational buildings - such as offices, depots, and service delivery hubs - ensuring they are maintained to the right standards, fully compliant, and ready to support frontline services.

Working within our Facilities Management service, you'll provide professional surveying expertise, leading repairs and maintenance activity while supporting the effective stewardship of assets within Dorset Council's Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP) 2024-2030.

This is a fast-paced and varied role with a strong focus on supporting service continuity, including:

  • Reactive and planned maintenance
  • Building compliance and statutory obligations
  • Contractor performance and delivery
  • Collaboration with operational services

What you'll deliver

You'll play a vital role in ensuring our operational estate remains safe, functional and fit for purpose by:

  • Managing your portfolio - overseeing condition, compliance and day-to-day repairs to support uninterrupted service delivery
  • Leading maintenance works - scoping, commissioning and managing contractors to deliver high-quality repairs and improvements
  • Ensuring compliance - helping maintain safe environments and adherence to statutory requirements
  • Supporting asset planning - maintaining accurate records and contributing to maintenance programmes and budget planning
  • Working in partnership - building strong, responsive relationships with service users and colleagues to resolve issues quickly and effectively
  • Providing resilience - participating in the out-of-hours emergency rota as required

You'll be a key enabler of frontline services - ensuring buildings are safe, available and performing when they are needed most.

About you

  • You'll bring a strong grounding in building surveying and maintenance, along with:
  • Experience in repairs & maintenance, building surveying or property management
  • Good technical understanding of building construction, compliance and health & safety legislation
  • Confidence in managing contractors and delivering works in live operational environments
  • Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills
  • The ability to prioritise and respond effectively in a reactive, service-led environment

Why Dorset Council?

You'll be joining a modernising Assets & Property service at the centre of how Dorset delivers its services.

Your work will

  • Directly support frontline service delivery
  • Help create a safe, compliant and resilient operational estate
  • Contribute to a more efficient and sustainable property portfolio
  • This is a role where your impact is immediate, visible and essential.
