Environmental and Sustainability Officer

We are seeking an experienced Environmental and Sustainability Officer to support the delivery of Ireland’s Blue Flag Programme and energy workshops programme. The role involves assessing environmental programme applications, analysing environmental data, undertaking site assessments, design and delivery of environmental education and energy workshops. Key responsibilities: As an Environmental and Sustainability Officer, you will play a central role in the delivery, evaluation, and integrity of key environmental programmes, including the Blue Flag Programme and energy workshops programme. Your new role will include: Assess Blue Flag applications against established criteria of water quality, environmental management, accessibility, safety and environmental performance. Carry out monitoring visits to participating coastal sites and marinas and provide recommendations to support programme standards and continuous improvement. Lead the design, development, and delivery of energy workshops for students and educators. Analyse environmental and operational data to support programme evaluation. Preparation of clear, accurate and evidence-based assessment reports, technical reviews and recommendations to inform stakeholder decisions. Engagement with multiple stakeholders including international and national environmental organisations (Environmental Protection Agency, Foundation of Environmental Education and Blue Flag International) to support the delivery of the programme. Monitor developments in environmental legislation, sustainability policy, and best practice to ensure programme compliance and continuous improvement. Collaboration on cross-programme activities to contribute to the delivery of other environmental programmes when required.

Essential Requirements Level 9 qualification in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Environmental Management, Climate Change, or a related discipline. Minimum 3 years’ experience in environmental education, environmental programme delivery, or sustainability initiatives in Ireland or comparable environmental governance settings. Experience analysing and interpreting technical environmental data to support evidence-based decision-making. Proven ability to engage effectively with local authorities, government agencies, community organisations, and other external stakeholders. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook, with the ability to analyse data, prepare professional reports, and maintain accurate records and documentation. Strong analytical, organisational, and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.

Desirable: Research experience in environmental sustainability, environmental education, or climate change. Familiarity with coastal, marine, water quality, biodiversity, or sustainable energy landscape. Knowledge of Blue Flag,Green Coast environmental award schemes, or similar environmental certification programmes
