Job Title

Engineering Manager – Data Services & Managed File Transfer

Job Description

So, who are we?

Hello, we're IG Group - FTSE 100 fintech operating across five continents, serving over 1.3m customers and handling billions of dollars in transactions – built on scale, trust, and proof. We didn't pivot to innovation; it's how we've always operated. What that means for the people who work here is real: genuinely complex problems to solve, the technology and resources to tackle them properly, and the kind of scope that's rare in established businesses.

The bar is high – bring a curious and forward-thinking mindset and we'll give you the platform to define what comes next.

Join us at IG – the future gets built here.

Your Team

You’ll be joining the Data Services & MFT team within IG Group’s Data Platforms function. Data Platforms sits at the core of a global, FCA-regulated online trading and financial services group, accountable for the data infrastructure that underpins trading, pricing, risk, compliance, reporting and analytics across the firm.

The Data Services & MFT team owns and operates:

  • A heterogeneous database estate of 500+ databases spanning Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis and AWS RDS, hosted on-premises (Nutanix) and in cloud.

  • Managed File Transfer (GoAnywhere MFT) operations, moving business-critical and regulated data securely between internal systems, counterparties and regulators.

  • 24/7 operational support across a follow-the-sun model spanning London and Bangalore.

The team is a key enabler of the firm’s regulatory obligations (FCA, MiFID II), operational resilience commitments, and cost-efficiency targets. It combines deep operational ownership with platform-engineering and automation work, including a self-service database provisioning platform and large-scale migration programmes.

This is a delivery-focused management role. You’re expected to stay close to the technology, guide engineers on complex issues, and maintain clear alignment with a line manager based in London. The best candidate will be technically credible, calm under pressure, highly organised, and able to build trust across geographies.

What you’ll do

Leadership & People

  • Lead, coach and develop a distributed team of ~8 engineers across London and Bangalore, including DBAs, platform engineers and MFT engineers.

  • Own hiring, onboarding, performance management, career development and succession planning for the team.

  • Maintain a sustainable and resilient 24/7 support model, including on-call rotation, handoffs and follow-the-sun coverage.

  • Foster a culture of engineering excellence, automation-first thinking, ownership and continuous improvement.

Operational Ownership

  • Be accountable for the availability, reliability, performance and recoverability of 500+ databases across Oracle, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis and AWS RDS.

  • Own MFT (GoAnywhere) operations, including secure file transfer workflows, partner connectivity, patching and vulnerability remediation.

  • Own incident, problem and change management for the estate; drive root-cause analysis and permanent fixes over recurring toil.

  • Ensure robust backup, recovery, HA and DR arrangements, including cross-data-centre replication and failover testing.

Platform Engineering & Automation

  • Drive the self-service database provisioning platform strategy and roadmap, reducing manual effort and freeing engineering capacity.

  • Champion infrastructure-as-code and automation tooling to reduce operational overhead and accelerate delivery.

  • Define and enforce database standards, guardrails, security baselines and operating procedures across engines.

Strategy, Migration & Transformation

  • Set the multi-year technical roadmap for the data services estate, balancing modernisation, risk and cost.

  • Lead major migration programmes end-to-end, managing risk, sequencing and stakeholder communication.

  • Define and execute cloud migration strategy, including lift-and-shift vs. re-platform decisions, and own capacity planning and investment cases.

Cost, Vendor & Licensing Management

  • Own and optimise Oracle licensing and support costs, including de-scope, consolidation and rebuy strategies, while managing compliance risk.

  • Manage strategic vendor relationships (Oracle, Nutanix and others) and own the team’s operational and capital budget.

Governance, Risk & Compliance

  • Ensure the estate meets regulatory and audit requirements (FCA, MiFID II and equivalent) and lead remediation of audit findings.

  • Embed security, data-protection and operational-resilience controls into day-to-day operations, and maintain documentation and runbooks to audit standard.

What you’ll need for this role

Experience

  • Substantial experience as a senior DBA or data platform engineer, with a proven track record of managing engineering teams in a regulated, high-availability environment.

  • Demonstrable experience managing large, heterogeneous database estates at scale across multiple engines.

  • Experience operating in a regulated financial services or high-availability domain.

  • Track record of leading distributed / offshore teams and 24/7 operational support models.

  • Proven delivery of large-scale migration or transformation programmes with minimal business disruption.

  • Vendor and licence management experience, including Oracle, with a track record of cost optimisation.

  • Experience defining and delivering automation / self-service platforms that reduce operational toil.

  • Cloud migration experience (AWS and/or GCP), including lift-and-shift vs. re-platform trade-offs.

Communication & Interpersonal Skills

Given the distributed nature of this role, with the line manager based in London, communication skills are a primary selection criterion.

  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills; able to produce clear, concise updates, incident reports and business cases independently.

  • Able to translate technical detail into business outcomes for non-technical senior stakeholders.

  • Calm, organised and methodical under pressure, with proactive communication habits and the ability to build trust across cultures and time zones.

Qualifications – Must Have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or equivalent professional experience.

  • Deep, hands-on expertise across Oracle and PostgreSQL in production, including HA/DR, performance tuning and security.

  • Track record of line-managing engineering teams and operating mission-critical systems to high availability standards.

  • Strong understanding of regulatory, audit and security obligations in a regulated environment.

Qualifications – Good to Have

  • Relevant certifications (Oracle Certified Professional, AWS / GCP, ITIL, people-leadership credentials).

  • Experience with Nutanix / NDB, GoAnywhere MFT, MongoDB, Redis or AWS RDS in production.

  • Experience producing infrastructure investment cases for executive (CDO/CTO) audiences.

Technical Environment

Candidates should have working knowledge across the following stack:

  • Databases: Oracle (RAC, Data Guard, licensing), PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, AWS RDS.

  • Infrastructure: Nutanix HCI / NDB, on-premises and hybrid-cloud hosting, DR/failover design.

  • MFT: GoAnywhere MFT or equivalent.

  • Cloud: AWS and/or GCP – database services, cost modelling, migration patterns.

  • Automation: Terraform, Ansible, Python / SQL / shell scripting, self-service platform design.

  • Operations: monitoring and observability, ITSM tooling, backup/recovery processes.

  • Commercial: Oracle licensing, capacity planning, FCA / MiFID II audit frameworks.
