Overview

The Senior Commercial Manager (SCM) is responsible for managing the commercial and contractual performance of a portfolio of projects within a business unit. The role provides leadership to project commercial teams, ensures robust risk management and supports the delivery of profitability and compliance with company policies. The SCM acts as the key commercial link between project teams, business unit leadership and the Commercial Director.
Responsibilities
•
Lead the commercial management of multiple projects from tender through to final account
•
Ensure all contractual documents are reviewed, negotiated and executed prior to project commencement
•
Manage commercial teams to deliver accurate reporting, valuations, cash management and risk mitigation
•
Provide commercial support during tendering, procurement and contract negotiations, ensuring risks and opportunities are identified and addressed
•
Implement the Internal Control and Risk Management Policy (ICRM) across all allocated projects.
•
Oversee subcontractor procurement, contract execution and supply chain management in line with company policy
•
Drive margin protection and improvement through diligent application of commercial controls
•
Ensure lessons learned are captured, communicated and embedded across the commercial team
•
Support dispute management and resolution, working with the internal legal team as required
•
Provide mentoring and leadership to Quantity Surveyors and Assistant Quantity Surveyors, ensuring capability development and succession planning.
Experience
Required
•
Significant experience as a Commercial Manager or equivalent within a Tier 1 construction contractor
•
Proven track record of delivering strong commercial outcomes across major projects or frameworks
•
Strong knowledge of contract administration, risk management and dispute resolution
•
Experience managing and developing commercial teams
Desirable
•
Chartered membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. RICS, CIOB)
•
Experience across multiple sectors such as infrastructure, commercial building and industrial projects
•
Knowledge of digital commercial systems and reporting tools.
Qualifications
- Demonstrates leadership and acts as a role model for the commercial function within projects
- Promotes open communication and collaboration with project leadership, operations teams and supply chain partners
- Provides clear and accurate reporting to the Commercial Director and business unit leadership on risks, financial performance and contractual matters
- Champions compliance with company policies, procedures and external legislation
- Supports the development of commercial staff, ensuring high standards of professional competence are maintained
- Contributes to continuous improvement by sharing data, knowledge and good practice across the commercial community
- Engages positively with commercial assurance teams and applies findings to improve performance
- Represents the company in a professional and constructive manner with clients, consultants and industry bodies
