Job description

Overview

The Senior Cloud Engineer will play a critical role in the modernization and implementation of a variety of cloud deployments for our US Army client. This is a hands-on engineering role — not solely an oversight or maintenance position. The successful candidate will independently design, stand up, and maintain cloud environments and must be comfortable operating in a self-directed capacity with minimal day-to-day guidance.

The primary cloud platform for this effort is currently Amazon Web Services (AWS); demonstrated, working proficiency in Microsoft Azure is also highly desired as the client supports many shops which operate out of other clouds. This position requires a seasoned professional with deep technical expertise in designing scalable, secure, and resilient cloud solutions aligned with Army standards and the Army’s cArmy cloud platform / ECMA (Enterprise Cloud Management Agency) environment, ensuring workloads are optimized for performance, security, and future scalability. The successful candidate pairs deep cloud expertise with subject-matter knowledge of how the US Army builds, secures, and deploys software.

Hybrid Role: On-site 3 days a week at Fort Belvoir, VA.

LMI is a new breed of digital solutions provider dedicated to accelerating government impact with innovation and speed. Investing in technology and prototypes ahead of need, LMI brings commercial-grade platforms and mission-ready AI to federal agencies at commercial speed.

Leveraging our mission-ready technology and solutions, proven expertise in federal deployment, and strategic relationships, we enhance outcomes for the government, efficiently and effectively. With a focus on agility and collaboration, LMI serves the defense, space, healthcare, and energy sectors—helping agencies navigate complexity and outpace change. Headquartered in Tysons, Virginia, LMI is committed to delivering impactful results that strengthen missions and drive lasting value.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, build, and deploy scalable, secure, and resilient cloud solutions aligned with Army standards, primarily on Amazon Web Services (AWS) with Microsoft Azure as a secondary platform, ensuring workloads are optimized for performance, security, and future scalability within the cArmy / ECMA environment.
  • Independently stand up new cloud environments from scratch translating mission requirements into working infrastructure with minimal supervision.
  • Comfortable operating in a constrained, governed environment where networking is centrally managed; able to navigate approval processes and external dependencies with patience and persistence.
  • Author Infrastructure as Code (Terraform required; CloudFormation, Bicep, or ARM a plus) to deliver repeatable, version-controlled, and auditable environments.
  • Design and operate CI/CD pipelines and DevOps workflows (e.g., GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Jenkins), including automated build, test, security scanning, and deployment.
  • Deploy and manage containerized workloads using Docker and Kubernetes (Amazon EKS / Azure AKS), including orchestration, auto-scaling, and GitOps-based delivery.
  • Implement monitoring, logging, and observability, along with load balancing, auto-scaling, and disaster recovery (defined RTO/RPO) for mission-critical workloads.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including clear system architecture and network diagrams, technical specifications, and user manuals.
  • Ensure compliance with Army cybersecurity standards and best practices, including the RMF/ATO process, DISA STIGs, and DoD Impact Level (IL4/IL5) controls.
  • Collaborate with Army stakeholders to ensure the successful integration of cloud solutions into the Army’s existing IT infrastructure.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to Army personnel and contractors working on cloud solutions.
  • Provide input and guidance to optimize cost-efficiency and prevent cost overruns (right-sizing, reserved capacity, and FinOps practices).
  • Stay abreast of emerging cloud technologies and Army standards, and recommend changes to the cloud environment as needed.
  • Support the team lead to ensure the implementation of best-of-breed technologies while mitigating risks.
  • Provide regular status reports to senior Army leaders and LMI management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. A Master's degree is highly desirable
  • At least 7 years of experience in cloud computing, including experience with cloud architecture, cloud security, and data architectures
  • Hands-on, expert-level experience with AWS as the primary platform — including core services such as EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, EKS, Lambda, and CloudWatch along with ETL tools like other commonly used services like Glue and API Gateway.
  • Demonstrated working experience with Microsoft Azure (e.g., VNets, AKS, Entra ID, Azure Monitor) and the ability to operate across a multi-cloud environment.
  • Strong DevOps background: Infrastructure as Code (Terraform required), CI/CD pipeline engineering, containerization (Docker / Kubernetes), and automation scripting in Python, Bash, and/or PowerShell.
  • Proven ability to architect and diagram cloud solutions and to build environments from scratch with minimal supervision — a self-directed engineer who can own designs end to end.
  • Experience working with Army stakeholders and contractors
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience with Army cybersecurity standards and best practices; familiarity with the RMF/ATO lifecycle, DISA STIGs, and DoD Impact Levels (IL4/IL5).
  • Knowledge of the Army’s cArmy cloud platform and ECMA (Enterprise Cloud Management Agency) standards is strongly preferred.
  • Experience building in modern software stacks using containerization, IaC, monitoring and management tools, load balancing and auto-scaling and disaster recovery
  • Active Secret clearance required. Please note: only US citizens are eligible to obtain a clearance.
  • No specific certifications are required; however, various certifications may be relevant though the list is not inclusive
  • Solution Architect
  • Cloud Architect
  • Cloud Systems Admin
  • Security+
  • Cloud+
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect
  • AWS Certified DevOps Engineer
  • Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert
  • HashiCorp Terraform Associate
  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)

Target salary range: $143,000 - $190,000. Final compensation will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to your skills, experience, education, and/or certifications.
