Overview
Advanced Obstetric Training for Family Medicine Physicians
The USA Family Medicine Obstetrics Fellowship prepares family physicians to provide comprehensive maternity care across inpatient and outpatient settings. This one-year fellowship offers advanced clinical and procedural training, including cesarean delivery and obstetric ultrasound, with a mission to expand safe, high-quality obstetric care to rural and underserved areas.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate obstetric patients and their fetal monitoring tracings in triage.
- Provide labor management, vaginal delivery, and instrumented deliveries to obstetric patients.
- Perform cesarean sections as primary surgeon with obstetric providers. Surgical skill level at the beginning of the fellowship will determine when the fellow is ready to be the primary surgeon.
- Augment surgical skills by assisting gynecologic surgeries, including tubal ligations, D&Cs and open hysterectomies.
- Perform post-partum tubal ligations on patients.
- Provide daily management of antepartum service patients.
- Perform limited obstetric ultrasound at USA Health Center for Women’s Health and Andalusia Health
- Teach residents on the obstetric service: triage evaluation, cervical exams, labor management, Pitocin augmentation, IUPC, FSE, vaginal delivery, and postpartum care.
- Present ACOG Practice Bulletins during weekly didactic sessions.
- Completes all mandatory department, educational and hospital requirements
- Adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards
- Regular and prompt attendance
- Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required

Additional Information
Employees must be in a regular position, working 20 hours or more per week (.50 FTE or greater) to qualify for benefits.
Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree
- Completion of a three-year family medicine residency program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
- Active Alabama medical license or eligibility to obtain
- Active board certification or eligibility to obtain
- Calid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Registration Number
- Committment to Alabama Family Practice Rural Health Board’s requirement of one year return of service in a rural Alabama community with fewer than 25,000 citizens OR employment at a family medicine residency that teaches obstetrics to future family medicine physicians.
