Job description
Overview
The Design Engineer is responsible for all facets of the design process for a product: Design ideation, proof of concept, verification of design to product requirements, validation of the product requirements to the customers’ requirements and supporting production launch.
Responsibilities
- Work with lead engineer to define engineering specifications that meet market requirements.
- Manage projects or aspects of projects to meet project schedule and product deliverables.
- Work with lead engineers on designs for electro-mechanical products that translate the product requirements into technically achievable results through prototyping.
- Test and Analyze prototypes to verify design output meets product specifications.
- Check products to validate design output meets customers’ requirements.
- Document Design using Bill of Materials, Solidworks 3D and Product Data Management systems.
- Work with suppliers to optimize technical aspects of the purchased content.
- Work with internal cross-functional teams to launch products into production.
- Support compliance to relevant codes and standards using third party NRTL agencies and testing labs as appropriate.
- Ensure components and assemblies adhere to applicable industry and business standards.
- Trouble shoot designs, installations, applications, and production issues in a timely manner.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, or Electro-Mechanical Engineering, and 3 to 5 years’ experience within a manufacturing or product design environment is required.
- Experience with Lean Product Design, Design for Manufacturing, PPAP part qualification, Failure Modes Effects Analysis, desired.
- Experience designing for commercial products, appliances or medical markets is highly desired.
- In addition, experience with the design of motion systems using DC gear-motors, and electric actuators is a plus.
Skills and Abilities
- Requires job-related software skills and Microsoft Office proficiency.
- 3D modeling and FEA model analysis experience using SolidWorks or another applicable CAD program is desired.
- Demonstrate knowledge of design for manufacturing metal fabrication, injection molding, casting, and machining processes.
- Familiarity with additive manufacturing techniques for prototyping, fixturing, and production.
- Understanding of GD&T and drawing standards for design.
- Read, analyze, and interpret a variety of information, such as technical procedures, business correspondence, and governmental regulations furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
- Effectively present information to employees, management, customers, regulatory agencies and members of the business community.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
- Regular office environment, approximately 65%.
- Modern production facility/engineering lab with heat and air conditioning approximately 25%
- Travel for Field investigation, supplier evaluations or testing in outside environment approximately 10%
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or touch; and talk and hear.
- The employee is regularly required to stand and move around, occasionally squatting or lying on the ground.
- The employee is periodically required to lift up to 50 pounds and up to 100 occasionally, with assistance.
