Overview

The Postdoctoral Fellow in Molecular Diagnostics is a training position in which the fellow will be exposed to all areas of the Clinical Molecular Laboratory (Clinical Genomics and Advanced Technology Lab). They will observe all aspects of routine clinical testing and participate in select areas. These areas of clinical molecular testing include wet-bench procedures, bioinformatic analysis, result interpretation and reporting, and quality assurance/quality improvement activities. The fellow will also actively participate in clinical assay validation/verification and various clinical/translation research projects with the expectation that this work will lead to data being presented at local and national conferences and published in scientific journals.

Responsibilities

  • Reports to the fellowship director.
  • Works in a team environment, striving to develop and maintain a high degree of professionalism when interacting with directors, pathologists, other trainees, technologists, physicians, other lab and hospital staff, and patients.
  • Abide by all institutional regulations and standards.
  • Learns and follows all relevant regulations and guidelines for clinical testing, including but not limited to those found in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and the College of American Pathologists (CAP)
  • Participates in the development, validation/verification, and implementation of clinical molecular testing as assigned by the laboratory director and/or fellowship director. Documents and communicates the results of this work with the director, assistant directors, manager, supervisor, and other appropriate individuals as requested.
  • Participates in clinical and translation research projects assigned by or developed with the lab director or fellowship director.
  • After appropriate training and documentation, participates in clinical testing under the supervision of the lab directors, manager, and supervisor.
  • Communicates results in oral and written fashion as presentations at national meetings, local seminars, and published abstracts and manuscripts.
  • Writes and reviews all SOPs as designated by the laboratory director.
  • Develops and maintains standard operating procedures and documentation for required activities.
  • Maintains quality assurance and quality control documentation as requested.
  • Participates in the preparation of regulatory and accrediting agencies' inspections of the laboratory (i.e., CAP inspection, DHMC safety inspections).
  • Participates in review of proficiency testing results.
  • Prepares and presents oral presentations within and outside of the lab and institution.
  • Performs all other duties as required or assigned.

  • All requirements for the degree, including dissertation defense, must be completed prior to the start date.
